Game Story

OAKLAND, California (Ticker) -- The Golden State Warriors made it as interesting as only they can at the end of a dismal season.

But their efforts fell short as Juwan Howard scored 30 points and Michael Finley added 21 to lead the Dallas Mavericks to a 110-101 victory and a sweep of the season series.

Dallas moved within one-half game of fourth-place Utah in the Western Conference standings. They will play each other in the first round unless the Jazz lose their last two games and the Mavericks win out.

"I think it's good we know who we're playing," Mavericks coach Don Nelson said. "Utah will be difficult to play in the playoffs because they're a veteran team and what we're trying to do is get our team to learn. And you couldn't learn any more than against Utah."

The Mavs host Minnesota on Wednesday. Utah hosts the Los Angeles Clippers and travels to Phoenix to close the season.

Undermanned for much of the season, the Warriors played Dallas close through the first half.

"The Warriors played well tonight, they really made a game of it Nelson said. "It wasn't an easy game for us, but we did enough to win."

After Antawn Jamison converted a three-point play, Adam Keefe hit a fast-break layup to tie it at 45-45 with 3:12 to play in the second quarter.

But because the Warriors put Dallas in the penalty with 10:15 left in the period, every foul sent the Mavericks to the line. Ten fouls and five turnovers later, Golden State trailed, 57-53, at halftime.

The Warriors have dropped nine straight to the Mavs and a season-high 12 in a row overall. It was the first time they scored 100 points at home since February 28 against Sacramento, but they fell to 2-42 when allowing opponents to reach the century mark.

Golden State wraps up the season Wednesday against Vancouver.

Dallas stretched the lead to 68-57 in the third quarter before the Warriors drew even at 70-70 as Vonteego Cummings' 3-pointer capped a 13-2 run with 4:55 to play. But Finley answered with a 3-pointer and Dirk Nowitzki converted two from the line to push the lead to five.

Jamison, who has started every game this season, had 31 points and eight rebounds and went 13-of-18 from the line, before taking an elbow to the mouth from Juwan Howard. He fell to the baseline, bleeding, before exiting for good with 2:53 to play and his team trailing, 106-95.

Jamison required stitches to his upper lip.

The Warriors had gotten to 98-91 on two free throws by Jamison with 5:46 to go, but those were his last points and they never threatened thereafter.

Howard made 12-of-18 shots as the Mavs improved to 12-1 when all five starters score in double figures.

"We played great all year," said Nowitzk, who had 14 points and went 10-of-13 from the line. "Our goal was to get into the playoffs. We've been through a lot this year and I think we've played well so far. I think it's time to step it up."

Cummings collected 22 points and 10 assists and rookie Chris Porter had 21 points for the Warriors, which was 1-of-6 from the arc and shot 41 percent (35-of-84).
