Game Story

ATLANTA (Ticker) -- The Washington Wizards have been an embarrassment the last two seasons. On Tuesday, the once-proud franchise reached a new low.

The Atlanta Hawks erased a 15-point deficit by scoring 42 points in the fourth quarter and closed their worst season in franchise history with a 122-119 victory over the Wizards, who tied a franchise mark with their 62nd loss.

Washington appeared to be in control, opening a 101-86 lead early in the fourth quarter. But the Hawks wiped out the deficit with a 19-0 run, holding the Wizards scoreless for more than four minutes.

"It's frustrating to us," Wizards guard Richard Hamilton said. "If you look at most of the games we lost this season, most of them were in the fourth quarter. We lost our composure and started doing careless things. And that's when they won and came back."

Second-year guard Dion Glover, who scored a career-high 28 points, completed a three-point play to give Atlanta a 105-101 lead with 5:22 remaining.

"I was just trying to attack the basket," said Glover, who was 10-of-20 from the field. "I knew they didn't have a shot blocker, so I was attacking the basket. That opened up things outside because they thought I was going to the hole and I started hitting my jump shots, too."

Atlanta finished coach Lon Kruger's first season at 25-57 -- three games below last season's previous franchise low-water mark of 28-54.

"Obviously, it was a great way to end the season," Kruger said. "I'm really happy for the guys. It kind of seemed like it was a struggle for the first 3 1/2 quarters to really get some activity and get things going defensively."

The Wizards (19-62) matched the franchise record for losses set by the Chicago Packers, who went 18-62 in their inaugural season of 1961-62.

Hamilton scored 30 points and Courtney Alexander added 25 for Washington, which hosts Toronto in its finale Wednesday.

"We had a 15-point lead and I think we turned the ball over three times," Wizards coach Leonard Hamilton said. "And we took two ill-advised shots. In those six possessions, they hit four threes on each time we made a mistake."

With both teams anxious to end their dismal seasons, Tuesday's contest featured little defense on either end. In a statistical oddity, Washington scored 31 points in each of the first three quarters.

The Wizards shot 50 percent (43-of-86) while holding Atlanta to 45.5 (45-of-99) percent but the Hawks attempted 99 shots.

Atlanta had four players score at least 20 points for the first time this season. Jason Terry contributed 27, Lorenzen Wright chipped in 23 and Nazr Mohammed added 22.

"All of a sudden, it became a game that was unmanageable for us and we gave them the momentum and we couldn't stop the onslaught," Leonard Hamilton said.

Coming off a career-high 30 points against Cleveland on Sunday, Alexander scored 14 points in the first quarter. Washington led 31-29 after the opening period before stretching its advantage to 62-54 at the break and 93-80 after three quarters.
