Game Story

LOS ANGELES (Ticker) -- The Los Angeles Lakers are repeating history and Shaquille O'Neal and Kobe Bryant are doing it together.

O'Neal had 33 points and 13 rebounds and Bryant scored 26 points as the Lakers clinched the Pacific Division title for the second straight season with a 108-91 romp of the Denver Nuggets in their season finale.

The Lakers locked up the second seed in the Western Conference playoffs and finished first in the Pacific for the 17th time in franchise history. They have captured the NBA championship seven of those times.

"We want every title," Bryant said. "The title we want is at the end though."

Los Angeles will host seventh-seeded Portland (50-32) in the opening round beginning this weekend. Last year, the Lakers defeated the Trail Blazers in an epic seven-game series in the Western Conference finals en route to their 12th world title.

"Everything is as right as it can be right now," Bryant said. "You're only as good as your last game and now we're going into the first-round series and it's going to be a war. Portland's record is no indication of what they can do. They are a great team."

"It feels good being that you have home-court advantage against every opponent, except San Antonio. It feels good to know we're going to be here at Staples defending our title," Bryant added.

O'Neal, who had not made more than three free throws in a regular season game without a miss over the last six seasons, set a personal mark by making 13-of-13 free throws. He is shooting 67 percent (175-of-263) from the line over the last 15 games.

"That was a big thing for us," Lakers coach Phil Jackson said. "That was a high note of the evening. He was very confident on the free-throw line. It was nice to see that."

The Lakers closed the season with an eight-game winning streak for the first time in team history.

O'Neal and Bryant accounted for 24 of the team's 30 free throws. Before the Nuggets seemingly fouled O'Neal on every attempt down the court in the fourth, the duo toyed with the lesser opponents in the third and entertained the crowd.

"It don't think it (Hack-a-Shaq) worked," O'Neal said. "I still think they'd rather see me go to the line then dunk the ball. It's fun. It didn't work last season and I've been putting in a lot of work, I still shoot every night around 11 o'clock."

After a wide open layup by O'Neal, Bryant delivered a high-flying pass only the center could catch and dunk.

"Kobe's come back and played tremendous ball," O'Neal said. "I've been saying all along that Kobe and myself should use what we have to get other people involved. It's no secret Kobe could score 40 and I could score 40, but we're not going to win with us getting 80 and no one else involved."

"We did a pretty good job in the first half," Denver coach Dan Issel said. "We made some mistakes, but then they came out in the third quarter and really picked up their defense. We had a hard time scoring in the third."

Denver saw an early seven-point advantage disappear but still was tied, 48-48, when rookie Dan McClintock, who started his first game of the season, tipped in a miss with 2:12 to play in the second period.

O'Neal converted a pair from the line, rookie Mike Penberthy did the same and added a 3-pointer and rookie Stanislav Medvedenko had a fast-break layup for a 57-51 lead at the break.

The Lakers opened the third quarter with a 16-2 run, pushing the lead to 73-53 on Bryant's steal and dunk. He had eight points, three assists and two steals in the surge.

O'Neal exited the game with 1:57 to play in the third to a standing ovation. But after the lead was cut to 80-69 to end the period, O'Neal was re-inserted to start the final period of play. He scored 12 points before heading to the bench for good with 6:08 remaining.

"I told you I was coming back with a vengeance in the second half," O'Neal said. "But playoffs are when it really, really counts. I'll be ready."

Raef LaFrentz scored 22 points and Voshon Lenard added 20 off the bench for Denver, which pulled within nine during garbage time in the fourth quarter but never challenged the lead. The Nuggets end their season at home Wednesday vs. Sacramento.

"They are starting to play good," Denver forward George McCloud said. "They have that whole attitude going and are starting to pull it together at the right time -- that's what winning a championship is all about -- coming together at the right time. It seems like their chemistry is back. ... Anytime you put Shaq and Kobe on the floor at the same time, you give yourself a chance to win a championship."
