Game Story

BOSTON (Ticker) -- The Boston Celtics put forth the same fight they did in the latter part of the season, unfortunately with the same result.

Jamal Mashburn scored 21 points to lift the playoff-bound Charlotte Hornets over the Celtics, 97-92, for a season series sweep as they head into the postseason on a four-game winning streak.

The Celtics lost by a combined 32 points in the first three contests and closed the season dropping four of its last five.

"We need to improve and hopefully go from 36 wins to 50," Boston forward Antoine Walker said. "It's going to be the last time I play with some of these guys, but the important thing is we have a very special bond. I think (interim coach Jim) O'Brien deserves a full season and should have input on who he wants on his team."

Boston finished 36-46, including 24-24 under O'Brien, who took over after Rick Pitino resigned January 8. The team fell short of the final Eastern Conference playoff spot and missed the playoffs for the sixth straight season, but made it interesting when it won four in a row and six of seven during the end of March, putting the pressure on Indiana.

"It's nice to have the respect of your players and I highly value that," O'Brien said, who has not been offered the job on a permanent basis. "But it all comes down to (owner) Paul Gaston. Paul and I will sit down and we'll know something in a few days."

Walker missed a potential game-tying 3-pointer with 12 seconds to play. Mashburn followed with two free throws with 8.8 seconds left that closed the scoring.

P.J. Brown and Hersey Hawkins scored 15 points each for the Hornets, who had six players in double figures. Brown grabbed 11 rebounds for Charlotte, which has won just two playoff series in its history.

"I like the fact that we won the past four games," Hornets coach Paul Silas said. "I like where we are at this point in the season. The veterans will have to carry us in the playoffs of course."

Charlotte (46-36) is the sixth seed in the East and will face Miami in the opening round beginning this weekend. The game will match Mashburn, Brown and Otis Thorpe against their club from last season.

"It's the start of a new chapter in my NBA career with the Hornets," Mashburn said. "I have no hard feelings, but I want to beat them."

Walker scored 32 points and Paul Pierce added 25 for Boston, which shot just 38 percent (31-of-80) from the field.

"Losing our last game is not the way I'd like to go out," Pierce said. "I look forward to next year, we have a great group of guys, I don't see our future going anywhere but up."

After Mashburn knocked down the free throws, Walker hailed a desperate long-range shot that bounced off the iron. Charlotte grabbed the rebound to close the season at FleetCenter. O'Brien stood motionless as the court cleared and the players embraced with hugs and high-fives.

"I want to be here to build this team into a championship," he said. "Any coach would want to be able to spend an entire season with a team, but obviously that's up to them."
