Game Story

OAKLAND, California (Ticker) -- The Vancouver Grizzlies played their final game as the Vancouver Grizzlies and set a franchise record.

The Grizzlies defeated the woeful Golden State Warriors, 95-81, and set a club mark for wins in a season.

"It was great," Vancouver coach Sidney Lowe said. "I guess it sounds strange to say when you only win 23 ballgames, but my experience was outstanding."

Vancouver has applied for relocation to Memphis, Tennessee and awaits a decision from a committee of seven NBA owners. Grizzlies owner Michael Heisley claimed the franchise will lose $46 million this season, forcing the need for a move.

Asked about his future with the team, Lowe said, "Well, I think I'll be there with them."

It would be the first franchise shift by an NBA team since the Kings moved from Kansas City to Sacramento after the 1984-85 season.

Shareef Abdur-Rahim had a career-high 26 rebounds with 22 points for the Grizzlies, who recorded their 23rd win. They finished 23-59 and avoided 60 losses in a full season for the first time.

"This wasn't the kind of year we anticipated or the one we wanted," Abdur-Rahim said. "But we did what we had to do and I think we improved a little bit. ... I want to have fun and play good basketball. Now don't take it like I don't want to be with the Grizzlies, I just want to be better, whether it's here or someplace else. That's just human nature."

The game was tied, 60-60, with 4:04 to play in the third quarter before Vancouver went on a 7-0 run. The Grizzlies never trailed again and ended a 10-game road losing streak.

During the run, Golden State coach Dave Cowens was hit with two technical fouls and ejected with 2:56 left. Vancouver scored the next five points at the line.

"Everybody went cold at the same time," Cowens said. "At one point, we were 1-of-19 from the field, which is ridiculous. There's a lot we want to throw in the trash can and start over next year. I'm looking forward to the lottery. Last year, we were in the same spot with no (draft) picks."

Brian Winters replaced Cowens on the bench. Ironically, Winters was the Grizzlies' first coach, going 15-67 in his only season.

"It was unfortunate," Winters said. "Vancouver played a good game, they made their shots."

Marred by injuries all season, Golden State won just two games after the All-Star break and lost its last 13. The team also lost 13 straight to end the 1956-57 season, when it was based in Philadelphia.

"I think it was a hard season on everybody, the fans, the media, coaches, players, all the injuries, all the ups and downs." Winters said. "The NBA season is hard enough if you have all your players and when you don't have them all, it makes it very difficult."

The Warriors had five players with double-digit rebounds and three in scoring. Antawn Jamison had 33 points and rookie Chris Porter had 14 and 11 boards. Both teams used just nine players, but the Warriors shot a dismal 30 percent (31-of-102).

"It's time to relax and clear my thoughts, mixed emotions," Jamison said. "There is frustration as far as the team part, but from an individual standpoint, I am very happy. It's definitely time to relax and clear my head and just enjoy life. That's what I plan on doing."
