Game Story

EAST RUTHERFORD, New Jersey (Ticker) -- Eddie who?

Rookie Richard Jefferson scored five of his 12 points during a key fourth-quarter run as the New Jersey Nets rallied from an 11-point deficit after three periods to defeat the Indiana Pacers, 103-97.

Acquired with fellow rookies Brandon Armstrong and Jason Collins in a draft day trade with the Houston Rockets, Jefferson -- who played for Arizona's national runner-up team last season -- quickly erased the memory of Eddie Griffin.

Griffin starred for one season at Seton Hall -- which also plays its home games at the Continental Airlines Arena -- and was drafted seventh overall in June by the Nets before being shipped to Houston.

Many fans grumbled after the perenially downtrodden Nets dealt away a player with the potential of Griffin. But at least in the season opener, it appeared as if New Jersey made the right move.

Jalen Rose, who scored a career-high 43 points, gave the Pacers an 87-78 lead by draining an 18-footer with just over nine minutes to play before the home team began to fight back to the delight of the 8,749 in attendance on a big sports night in the New York metropolitan area.

Also taking place nearby was Game Three of the World Series at Yankee Stadium and the return of Michael Jordan at Madison Square Garden.

"I told my guys that we came in soft," Nets coach Byron Scott said. "I didn't yell at the guys at the half. I just told them, `You guys played a very terrible first half of basketball,' and we just shot the ball extremely poor."

Aaron Williams began the 11-1 stretch by making a pair of free throws and, after a bad pass by Indiana point guard Jamaal Tinsley, Jefferson took a feed from newcomer Jason Kidd and converted a layup to make it 87-82.

"It was all about limiting them to just one shot and to make it as tough as possible for Jalen and Reggie (Miller)," Kidd said. "When both are going, they are tough to stop."

Jermaine O'Neal went 1-of-2 from the line for the Pacers, but Kidd answered with a pair of free throws and Jefferson completed a three-point play after following a missed layup by Williams.

The free throw pulled the Nets within a point and moments later, Jefferson swung a pass to the right sideline for Kerry Kittles, whose 17-foot jumper gave New Jersey its first lead since early in the third quarter.

"The same old story -- defensively, you do a good enough job where you get a team to shoot 38 percent. But the offensive rebounds again killed us tonight," Pacers coach Isiah Thomas said. "They were able to get more shot opportunites and we couldn't control the glass."

Travis Best answered with a 3-pointer for the Pacers before Keith Van Horn's 3-pointer off an assist by Kidd put the Nets on top for good at 92-91 with 5:21 left.

Van Horn scored 26 points, Kittles added 20 and Kidd contributed 14 while falling one assist shy of a triple-double. He had 10 rebounds for New Jersey, which held a 47-42 advantage on the boards and shot 39 percent (37-of-95).

"It feels great. This is a big win for us," Van Horn said.

Rose had a fantastic night in a losing effort, going 18-of-27 from the field and 2-of-3 from beyond the arc. The Pacers connected on six 3-pointers and 46 percent (37-of-81) of their shots but committed 22 turnovers that led to 28 points.

"I wanted to somehow make it tougher on (Rose)," Kidd said. "The basket was huge for him tonight. He's a talented guy. I was just trying to make it tough on him, trying to deny him the ball and not let him catch it where he could catch it."

Miller was the only other Pacer in double figures with 20 points. Jeff Foster had 12 rebounds.

"The guys were doing a great job of getting me open, setting screens and delivering the ball to get me shots," Rose said.
