Game Story

ORLANDO, Florida (Ticker) -- The 1-2 punch of Tracy McGrady and Grant Hill was too much for Vince Carter.

McGrady scored 23 points and Hill added 22 as the Orlando Magic opened the season with a convincing 114-85 rout of Carter and the Toronto Raptors.

Carter, a Florida native, scored just 11 points on 2-of-14 shooting during a forgettable night. He went down late in the first half with a bruised left knee after colliding with Horace Grant, played four scoreless minutes in the third quarter and sat out the fourth.

"It is a painful feeling right now," Carter said. "It is sore, but I felt like I could still go. It was their decision (to sit out)."

Meanwhile, McGrady and Hill demonstrated why many believe Orlando is a leading contender to win the Eastern Conference. McGrady made 9-of-16 shots and handed out five assists in improving to 3-1 in head-to-head meetings with Carter -- his cousin and former Toronto teammate.

McGrady, who feuded with Carter in Toronto as well as last season, felt the game answered questions about the Magic's chemistry.

"We control our own destiny," McGrady said. "Everyone was wondering how we were going to get along on the court, whether there were enough balls out there. But we're just going to play basketball, we don't worry about that. Like you can see tonight, we play well together."

Hill, who played just four games last season before undergoing surgery on his left ankle, showed no effects from the injury. He made 9-of-14 shots and added five assists for Orlando, which placed six players in double figures.

"I don't think either one of us really played as well as we could have," Hill said. "Tracy was a little out of rhythm, I was a little nervous in the first half."

Orlando held a 55-47 halftime lead and took control with a 19-4 run to start the third quarter. Hill and Darrell Armstrong each had seven points in the spurt, while McGrady scored the other five for a 74-51 lead with just under six minutes left.

"I thought Darrell's energy to start the the third quarter was unbelievable," Magic coach Doc Rivers said. "It's amazing that if you look at all his stats, they are not all that great, but I thought he was the key in the third quarter."

Armstrong made 6-of-7 shots and finished with 16 points to go with five assists.

A long 3-pointer by McGrady gave the Magic an 86-62 lead entering the fourth quarter. Orlando made 12-of-17 shots in the decisive third, while the Raptors connected on just 23 percent (3-of-13).

"They got off to a great start and we were very reactive to that," Toronto coach Lenny Wilkens said. "You cannot play good basketball when you're playing like that. That wasn't a good game for us."

Chris Childs led Toronto with 13 points off the bench while Hakeem Olajuwon and Keon Clark each added 11. The Raptors shot 36.5 percent (27-of-74) and committed 21 turnovers.

"It is just one game," Childs said. "That was a horrible exhibition of basketball on our part. We did not once during the game try to disrupt what they were doing."

Patrick Ewing, a former teammate of Childs with the New York Knicks, had a credible debut for Orlando. He collected 12 points and eight rebounds in 25 minutes off the bench and slightly got the better of Olajuwon, who defeated Ewing and the Knicks in seven games in the 1994 NBA Finals.
