Game Story

SEATTLE (Ticker) -- Gary Payton scored 13 of his 25 points in the fourth quarter as the Seattle SuperSonics held off the San Antonio Spurs, 114-108, for their first win of the season.

Payton made 9-of-19 shots and handed out 10 assists. His layup with 6:53 remaining gave the SuperSonics a 93-85 lead and he made sure the Spurs did not threaten again.

After Rashard Lewis won a jump ball from Tim Duncan, Payton made another layup for a 100-93 lead with 4:19 remaining. He sank a 3-pointer to widen the advantage to 103-94 with 3:19 to go.

The Spurs closed to 110-106 on Terry Porter's 3-pointer with 42 seconds to play. Payton responded with a 14-footer that sealed it with 26 seconds left.

"When it's time for us to get big baskets or we need something special to happen, they want me to have the ball," said Payton, an All-Star who has been asked to provide leadershipm for a young team.

"It's funny how down the stretch Gary got the ball a lot," joked Seattle guard Brent Barry. "That's what we're going to rely on. You know no matter what happens through three quarters, we're going to know that Gary is going to have the ball in the fourth quarter. He's going to make the game-winning plays or he's going to find someone who can make it happen."

Barry scored 24 points and Lewis added 22 for the Sonics, who suffered a six-point loss at Sacramento on Tuesday.

"We were more into it tonight," Payton said. "We were playing our defensive schemes. We were collapsing and making people take hard shots. We were doubling and making them kick it."

To play that style, Seattle went to a smaller, quicker lineup. That forced San Antonio coach Gregg Popovich to sit All-Star center David Robinson for the entire fourth quarter.

"It was just the matchups," Popovich said. "I didn't think he would be able to guard Rashard Lewis."

"I was very surprised, but Pop sometimes goes with different matchups," Robinson said. "They had a shooting lineup in there tonight and maybe that's the decision he wanted to make."

Duncan had 22 points and 13 rebounds and Robinson added 17 and eight. Antonio Daniels scored 21 points for the Spurs, who allowed the Sonics to shoot 53 percent (40-of-76).

"Their aggressiveness was higher than ours," Duncan said. "They pushed the ball up and they shot the ball with confidence. We just seemed that every shot we took, they were in our face. Little points like that are what sets the game apart."

Seattle had lost five of its last six meetings with San Antonio.

"I think maybe they were trying to adjust to our smaller lineup and you know basically trying to match up with us because the small lineup for us really played well defensively and offensively," Sonics coach Nate McMillan said.

Seattle took the lead for good at 42-41 on Barry's 3-pointer with 7:15 left in the second quarter. He scored 13 points in the first half, which ended with the Sonics holding a 55-52 lead.

Lewis scored 13 points in the third quarter, helping Seattle open an 81-74 lead entering the final period. San Antonio closed to 85-83 on two free throws by Duncan, but Lewis and Desmond Mason hit 3-pointers around a foul shot by Duncan to rebuild the lead to 91-84 with 8:06 remaining.

"We just tried to get everybody involved," Payton said. "We want these young guys to get their confidence up and a lot of them are getting their confidence."
