Game Story

LOS ANGELES (Ticker) -- If the first three games of the season are any indication, fouling Shaquille O'Neal no longer is an effective strategy.

O'Neal made 16-of-18 free throws and scored 36 points as the Los Angeles Lakers remained undefeated with a 117-94 rout of the Phoenix Suns.

O'Neal's utter dominance of opponents in recent seasons has led to the development of the "hack-a-Shaq" strategy, in which teams intentionally foul him to exploit his .531 career free-throw percentage.

But the All-Star center is having no problem at the line so far, making 34-of-48 attempts.

"I was just messing around, not concentrating," O'Neal said of his success at line. "I don't worry about my percentages, I just know I need to hit them when I need to hit them. I'm just concentrating on what the team does."

O'Neal was 10-of-21 from the floor and his 16 free throws were just two fewer than the entire Suns' team.

"We held him under 50 percent from the floor, which is very hard to do," Phoenix coach Scott Skiles said. "He just made his free throws. He hurt us, obviously, that's an understatement."

"He was terrific out there," Lakers coach Phil Jackson added. "He was dominating. It was a night where he could have scored 50."

O'Neal also had 13 rebounds and six blocks despite claiming he was in contstant pain from a toe injury that plagued him throughout the preseason.

"It's a stiff big toe, an arthritic condition, I've always had it," he said. "My foot is killing me. I'll just play through it and hope it doesn't affect me."

Kobe Bryant had 24 points, nine assists and six rebounds for the Lakers, who took control in the third quarter, when they made 11-of-15 shots.

Los Angeles had a 78-61 lead after three quarters, but Phoenix opened the fourth with an 9-4 run to pull within single digits. Bryant made a driving layup on the Lakers' next possession and the Suns got no closer than 11 thereafter.

Lindsey Hunter scored 13 points and Devean George added 11 for Los Angeles, which shot 56 percent (41-of-73).

"As a shooter, it's a dream," said Hunter, who made 2-of-3 3-pointers. "We have a big guy down there that commands a lot of attention. If they don't help, he's going to score. If they do help, we have guys to knock down shots."

Penny Hardaway led the Suns with 25 points and Stephon Marbury had 21 and 11 assists. Shawn Marion recorded 17 points and 11 assists for Phoenix, which has lost 20 of the last 24 meetings with the Lakers.

Los Angeles never trailed after a layup by Bryant made it 7-5 two minutes into the game. The Lakers took the lead for good, 20-19, seven minutes later on a free throw by Hunter.

Los Angeles was ahead, 34-31, in the second quarter when O'Neal scored nine points during a 12-5 run that gave the Lakers their first double-digit cushion, 46-36, with 4:51 to go.

Phoenix closed within 56-50 early in the second half, but the two-time defending champions scored 23 of the next 44 points. After the Suns climbed within nine in the fourth, the Lakers outscored Phoenix, 34-20, over the final 9:16.

Los Angeles has won 11 consecutive regular-season games dating to last season and are 71-19 all-time against the Suns at home.
