Game Story

MINNEAPOLIS (Ticker) -- Kevin Garnett scored 11 points and grabbed five rebounds during the decisive third quarter as the Minnesota Timberwolves posted a 111-102 victory over the winless Memphis Grizzlies.

Rookie Shane Battier led Memphis with 22 points, but it was not enough for the Grizzlies, who saw the game get away from them during a third quarter in which they were dominated by Garnett and outscored, 28-17.

The All-Star forward was all over the floor as the Timberwolves quickly turned a one-point halftime lead into a 12-point advantage.

"In the first half, I take total responsibility for our performance," Garnett said. "Some shots wouldn't fall. I realize that when I put my head down, it takes away from the team's energy. At halftime, I told the team I was going to turn it around and I changed my attitude and it picked us up."

Garnett began the second half with a layup and, after a pair of free throws by Battier, took a feed from Terrell Brandon for an easy layup. The duo hooked up again moments later and Garnett hit a 19-footer that made it 63-58.

A jumper and a three-point play by Brandon upped the advantage to 10 points and Garnett capped the 11-0 run by taking a feed from Wally Szczerbiak and throwing down a dunk with 8:54 to play in the period.

"The game isn't won in the first quarter," Garnett added. "We aren't going to play a perfect game. I wish we could."

Minnesota's lead grew to 17 points later in the quarter and the Grizzlies never threatened thereafter as they fell to 0-2.

However, the story was Garnett and, to a lesser extent, Szczerbiak.

Garnett made just one of his first seven shots before connecting on 11 of his last 23. He finished with 30 points, 14 rebounds, six assists and a steal while going 8-of-12 from the foul line.

Szczerbiak netted 22 points on 8-of-14 shooting, added eight assists and pulled down six rebounds for the Timberwolves, who outscored Memphis at the line, 28-15, and held a 48-45 advantage on the boards.

"In the second half, we played the way we should play," Szczerbiak said. "In the first half, we were into playing defense like we know we should, but in the second we put it together like we will play the rest of the season."

Minnesota improved to 2-0 following a season-opening victory over injury-riddled Philadelphia, but that win came despite subpar efforts from two of the team's biggest stars. Garnett was limited to 12 points on 5-of-12 shooting and Szczerbiak shot 4-of-14 for 12.

On Friday, the pair did the bulk of the scoring. Brandon had 15 points and five assists and Joe Smith contributed 12 points and six rebounds for Minnesota, which connected on 47 percent (40-of-85) of its shots and committed just 12 turnovers.

Battier led six players in double figures, but the Grizzlies shot just 43 percent (39-of-91) and missed 11-of-26 free throws.

"Tonight we just missed our shots," Minnesota coach Sidney Lowe said. "We had three layups right inside the key that we couldn't convert in the first half. KG beat us up the court several times for some easy shots."
