Game Story

CLEVELAND (Ticker) -- Tracy McGrady showed the Cleveland Cavaliers just how good he is.

McGrady had 22 points and 11 rebounds as the Orlando Magic cruised to a 99-69 victory over the Cleveland Cavaliers.

McGrady struggled in Friday's 117-107 loss at Indiana, making just 3-of-10 shots. But on Saturday, the 22-year-old wunderkind displayed his All-Star form.

McGrady hit 9-of-20 shots and had several easy baskets as the Magic went on a 16-2 run over the final 4:13 of the second quarter, opening a 55-33 halftime lead.

During the run, Darrell Armstrong made two 3-pointers and McGrady had a uncontested dunk.

The third quarter didn't get any better for Cleveland. Horace Grant scored six straight points, McGrady drilled a jumper and Pat Garrity nailed a wide-open 3-pointer in front of the Cavaliers' bench, giving the Magic a 70-41 lead with 4:07 to play.

"It's a whole lot better playing with him than against him," Magic forward Grant Hill said. "He's a great player. We are still learning each other and he can do everything."

Hill, who is playing in just his seventh game with McGrady, added 14 points on 6-of-11 shooting in just 21 minutes.

While McGrady was playing like an All-Star, Orlando's defense was smothering. The Magic limited the Cavaliers to 25 percent shooting (20-of-79).

"That was a (heck) of a defensive effort by us," Magic coach Doc Rivers said. "Last night against Indiana we came out and showed no passion for the most part. That's something we usually don't do. I think our guys wanted to prove tonight that that was a fluke."

"Defense was definitely the key tonight," Hill added. "Defense is our trademark. That's something we take a lot of pride in. If we play defense we win. Thats something we have got to realize and do every night."

The Cavaliers, who are expected to be among the worst teams in the Eastern Conference, missed nine of their first 10 shots and never flowed offensively.

Things became so bad for the Cavs that midway through the fourth quarter that they had only 14 baskets, threatening the NBA futility record of 18 set by Chicago on April 10, 1999 against Miami.

Jumaine Jones made Cleveland's 18th basket and Bimbo Coles ensured the Cavs would not tie the record with 3:32 to play.

"We didn't hit our shots and didn't guard anybody," Jones said. "When we are not hitting our shots we have to go back and play defense and guard people. The guys who were hitting in Miami weren't hitting tonight."

Cleveland also threatened to finish with the lowest shooting percentage in NBA history. At one point it was at 21.4 percent (15-of-70). But the Cavs made five of their last nine shots to avoid the distinction.

"If we don't bring the energy, we are going to get our butts whipped," Coles said. "We have already proved that twice at home. We went on the road and played like a basketball team and we know we could win the game. Then we come home and play like we couldn't win a basketball game. It's two different teams."

The record for lowest shooting percentage in a game is 22.9 percent, set by the Milwaukee Hawks against the Minneapolis Lakers on November 6, 1954.

Andre Miller led the Cavs with 20 points. After collecting a triple-double on Friday, he made 14-of-15 foul shots and had five assists.

"We played another bad home game and that really concerns me," Cleveland coach John Lucas said. "My biggest problem is that we have a problem playing at home. We were two different teams tonight, I know we are not good enough but when we don't make shots we still have to go and do things and we didn't do that tonight."
