Game Story

AUBURN HILLS, Michigan (Ticker) -- If the fans at the Palace of Auburn Hills came to see Michael Jordan, they needed to arrive early and did not have to stay late.

Jerry Stackhouse scored 22 of his 28 points in the first half as the Detroit Pistons built a big lead and coasted to a 100-78 romp over the Washington Wizards.

Stackhouse connected on 10-of-13 shots and Clifford Robinson added all 12 of his points in the first two periods, when the Pistons shot 58 percent (25-for-43) and took a 61-37 lead into the locker room.

"I think everyone's excited about how we're playing," Stackhouse said. "I think the biggest key that has hampered us over the past few years has been our defense and right now our defense has been outstanding. I think if we can continue to keep this up we can have a successful year."

Jordan scored 17 points, hitting 7-of-14 shots, in the first half. He finished with 19 points and a season-high eight rebounds but sat down for good with 7:51 to play in the third quarter.

"I felt good," Jordan said. "I just think we didn't come prepared to play the game. That's something with the young team (that) we're going to have to eliminate. Give them credit too, they shot the ball particularly well. Next thing you know, we're down 24 points.

"Defensively we did not come with the same intensity and it kind of put us in a hole. It's no different than a one-point loss, getting killed by 35 or losing by one."

The Wizards were playing on consecutive nights for the first time this season after posting a 90-76 home win over the Philadelphia 76ers on Saturday.

The Pistons played before a crowd of 22,076, marking the first time since 1993 that their first two home games were sold out.

Washington coach Doug Collins was facing his former team for the first time since he was fired in the middle of the 1997-98 season with a 21-24 record.

"Rick Carlisle was nice to us tonight, he could have beat us by about 50," Collins said. "We have not matched up well with this team. We don't really have anybody that can match up with Stackhouse and Cliff Robinson's been a tough matchup for us. I thought we did not compete. Detroit took it to us. I'm just not going to play (Jordan) on nights like this when we're getting our butts kicked."

Dana Barros scored a season-high 17 points, making 5-of-8 3-pointers and missing all four of his shots inside the arc for the Pistons.

Ben Wallace pulled down 11 of his 12 rebounds in the first half and Corliss Williamson again gave Detroit a lift off the bench, totaling 18 points in 16 minutes. Williamson made 10-of-11 free throws while the Wizards were 8-for-9 from the line.

"When we defend, we play well," Rick Carlisle said. "Defense was key for us. Corliss has come in two nights in a row and has given us a spark."

Washington took a 26-18 lead into the second quarter after Stackhouse hit a 3-pointer from the right wing at the buzzer.

Williamson scored seven points in a 17-2 run that pushed Detroit's lead to 43-22 as Barros hit a 3-pointer with 6:03 to go. Barros also nailed a 3-pointer as time expired in the second to make it 61-37.

The Pistons did not let the margin dip below 22 points in the third quarter and built it as big as 37 when Williamson hit two from the line with 2:38 left.
