Game Story

LOS ANGELES (Ticker) -- Kobe Bryant scored 15 of his 38 points in the fourth quarter, when the Los Angeles Lakers rallied for a 100-96 victory over the Utah Jazz.

Bryant made 6-of-8 shots from the floor in the period as Los Angeles (4-0) rallied from a 78-70 deficit and remained one of four undefeated teams in the NBA.

Bryant also had seven assists and six rebounds and Shaquille O'Neal added 30 points and eight boards as the Lakers shot 51.5 percent (35-for-68).

"We had to tighten up a little bit on defense," Bryant said. "I just started finding my rhythm out there. My teammates gave me some space and gave me some room to operate. We know this team is a good road team and a gets out to a fast start. It's fun to play in a game like this; it's fun to come from behind."

Utah's Karl Malone scored 26 points but picked up his fifth foul early in the fourth quarter and was whistled for a push-off with 3:29 to play.

Donyell Marshall had 14 points and seven boards and rookie Andrei Kirilenko added 11 and seven off the bench for Utah, which led by as much as 19 points in the second quarter.

"We have a veteran team and a lot of veterans we can rely on," Marshall said. "It was a frustrating loss. I don't think we executed as well as we did in the first half. We didn't execute our offense and free throws to play our game. Then we started missing open shots that we were hitting in the first half."

Bryant and Marshall traded layups and Utah got within 97-96 when Marshall tipped in a missed shot by Stockton with 48.6 seconds to go.

The Jazz blew a chance to regain the lead when Marshall missed two free throws with 13 seconds left. Bryant responded with a pair 2.5 seconds later.

O'Neal made 10-of-18 free throws, but the Jazz were uncharacteristically bad from the line, shooting 62 percent (23-for-37).

Los Angeles did not have a lead until Bryant hit a turnaround jumper to make it 83-82 with 6:58 remaining.

The Lakers turned the ball over on their first three possessions of the fourth quarter before Bryant hit a 17-footer from the right wing to cut the deficit to 78-72 with 10:38 remaining. After consecutive turnovers by Marshall and Stockton, Bryant made 1-of-2 free throws with 9:43 to go.

Just after re-entering the game, Malone hit a jumper from the top of the key to give Utah an 82-78 lead with 8:22 remaining.

Lindsey Hunter, who had 16 points, hit a 3-pointer from the top of arc to pull the Lakers within 82-81 with 8:03 left. Each team missed shots before Bryant's 18-footer gave the Lakers their first lead. Malone had a layup and a jumper around a 21-footer by Bryant, leaving the Jazz with an 86-85 edge with 5:50 left.

"Kobe Bryant pretty much dominated us. It's the same story with those two guys and Lindsey Hunter, he's a great shooter and made some open shots," Utah coach Jerry Sloan said.

Bryant also missed a pair of free throws with 2:33 left and the Lakers leading by one. But John Amaechi missed a pair from the line with 2:17 to go, and Hunter hit a 22-footer 16 seconds later to give the Lakers a 95-92 lead.

Malone scored 12 points and Quincy Lewis added 10 in the first half as the Jazz took a 57-47 lead. Malone opened the third quarter with consecutive jumpers, but O'Neal answered with a three-point play to pull the Lakers within 61-50 with 9:17 left.
