Game Story

SACRAMENTO, California (Ticker) -- Vlade Divac scored 12 of his 25 points in the first quarter as the Sacramento Kings jumped out to an early lead and rolled to a 103-83 victory over the San Antonio Spurs.

In an early-season test of supremacy in the Western Conference, the Kings -- still without All-Star power forward Chris Webber -- overwhelmed the Spurs, who may have been feeling the effects of Saturday night's win in Portland.

"If we just realize that if we keep playing through Vlade, and we keep moving the ball and move people, we are very hard to guard," Kings coach Rick Adelman said. "He got us going. He started the game. He makes things happen for us."

"We had a good one last night and tonight we came in and we didn't make shots early," Spurs center David Robinson said.

Divac made 10-of-15 shots and grabbed 11 rebounds. He outplayed fellow All-Star center Robinson, who was 0-of-8 and scored just two points in 16 minutes.

"Vlade is more aggressive now with Chris out," Spurs All-Star forward Tim Duncan said. "He took Chris Webber's spot so he is going to get his shots. It looks liek he's confident in that position."

Mike Bibby contributed 20 points for the Kings (3-0), who never trailed and led by as many as 26 points. They remained one of four unbeaten teams in the NBA.

Duncan had 17 points and 13 rebounds for the Spurs (2-2), who shot less than 34 percent (42-of-89).

"When we are playing against two of the best big guys in the league, you have to do something special," Divac said. Tonight, we did. We rebounded well, we blocked shots, we switched and got help from our guards. We played very good team defense."

Divac threw in a layup and a hook as the Kings scored the first eight points. The Spurs did not score from the field until Duncan made a jumper nearly five minutes into the contest.

"Vlade came out and set the tempo," Kings guard Bobby Jackson said. "That's what we've got to do."

"When he (Webber) catches the ball down low, we trust him so much that we just stand," Divac said. "That's not our game. We have to move around. When we move, no one can stop us."

A finger roll by Doug Christie gave Sacramento a 25-13 lead with 1:29 left in the first quarter. San Antonio scored the last six points of the period but never got any closer.

Bibby scored six points in a 10-1 surge that pushed the lead to 44-26 with 5:32 left in the second quarter. The Kings led by double digits thereafter, settling for a 55-42 halftime bulge.

A driving layup by Peja Stojakovic made it 67-47 with 7:03 left in the third period. A jumper by Hedo Turkoglu gave the Kings their largest lead at 96-70 with 5:25 to play.

Stojakovic scored 11 points and Scot Pollard, Bobby Jackson and Lawrence Funderburke added 10 apiece for the Kings, who shot 47 percent (42-of-89) and held a 55-46 rebounding edge.

"Chris is out so we try to be fast and quick with the basketball," Stojakovic said. "If not. we try to get the ball into Vlade."

Antonio Daniels scored 11 points and Steve Smith and Bruce Bowen added 10 each for the Spurs. Smith scored 36 points in a 106-90 win at Portland on Saturday.
