Game Story

ORLANDO, Florida (Ticker) -- In a battle between superstars, Gary Payton made big shots and Tracy McGrady made mistakes.

Payton scored seven of his 32 points in the final 1:52 and McGrady faltered down the stretch as the Seattle SuperSonics opened a five-game road trip with an exhausting 123-119 double-overtime victory over the Orlando Magic.

McGrady and Payton each scored five points in the last 90 seconds of the first overtime, and the second overtime was decided by the two All-Stars, as well.

McGrady opened it with a jumper that gave the Magic a 113-111 lead, their first since the opening quarter. Seattle took the lead on a 3-pointer by Desmond Mason and a free throw from Vin Baker before McGrady made a spinning layup to tie it with 2:13 to go.

Payton nailed a 3-pointer and a leaner around a layup by Orlando's Grant Hill to give Seattle a 120-117 lead. Another layup by Hill cut the deficit to one, and Payton was called for traveling with 40 seconds left.

Orlando put the ball in the hands of McGrady, who made an errant pass out of bounds. Payton sank 1-of-2 free throws for a two-point edge and McGrady missed a layup with 14 seconds remaining as Seattle escaped with its first road victory.

"We gave ourselves several chances to win the ballgame, but we fell short," McGrady said. "I had some great looks, but the shots didn't fall."

"We had the last blow to come out with the win," Seattle coach Nate McMillan said. "Also, Gary, whose shot hasn't been with him the last couple of games, and tonight he came back and didn't give up on his shot."

Payton made 11-of-23 shots and dished out 11 assists. Rashard Lewis posted career highs with 36 points, despite making just one shot in the final 16 minutes, and 19 rebounds.

"I'm just trying to pick up my scoring and rebounding a little bit and help the team win more games," Lewis said. "G.P. is our go-to man. In the overtime, we went to him and he was able to make some baskets and help us win."

McGrady had 27 points, seven rebounds and six assists but made just 10-of-26 shots. Hill added 28 points and eight rebounds for Orlando, which began a stretch of nine straight games against Western Conference opponents.

"It is good for us to go through this," Hill said. "Sometimes, when things happen so quickly, so easily, you don't appreciate it. Where we're trying to go is not going to be easy. (We) just got to work hard, try and change this problem of digging ourselves a hole every other game."

The Magic trailed, 96-86, with 5:11 to go in the fourth quarter before rallying. They closed regulation with a 14-4 run, led by Hill, who scored the first five points of the spurt and opened it by making his first 3-point attempt of the season.

Pat Garrity tied the game on a pair of free throws with 1:19 remaining after he was fouled on a fast break. He was injured on the play and was removed after making his second attempt.

Mason and Lewis each missed potential go-ahead jumpers for Seattle and Darrell Armstrong missed a wide-open 3-pointer for Orlando with 36 seconds left. McGrady misfired on a jumper with one second remaining.

Mason, who scored 16 points, opened overtime with back-to-back acrobatic layups to give the Sonics a 104-100 lead. Horace Grant and Hill responded with consecutive shots to tie it, but Payton nailed a 3-pointer with 1:32 left to reclaim the lead for Seattle.

McGrady forged another tie with a three-point play but was beat on the other end by Payton, who made a driving layup around the 6-8 swingman.

McGrady tied it with four free throws in the final 48 seconds around a long jumper by Baker, who had 22 points and six rebounds. Lewis missed a 3-pointer at the buzzer to send the game into double overtime.

Lewis made 15-of-28 shots but missed five in a row after nailing a 3-pointer with 6:28 left in the fourth. His only basket thereafter was a 3-pointer 56 seconds into double overtime.

Seattle shot 47 percent (48-of-103) and made 9-of-21 3-pointers. Lewis made 5-of-8 from the arc and Payton sank 3-of-4.

Brent Barry made just 2-of-11 shots from the floor and 1-of-7 from 3-point range but collected 11 assists and five rebounds for the Sonics.

The Magic made 8-of-25 3-pointers, led by Garrity, who was 4-of-8 from the arc and scored 14 points before getting hurt. Armstrong scored 13 of his 17 points in the first quarter. After draining 3-of-6 3-pointers in the opening period, he made just 1-of-6.
