Game Story

SAN ANTONIO (Ticker) -- Tim Duncan had 26 points and David Robinson rebounded from a brutal performance with 17 as the San Antonio Spurs posted an 104-89 victory over the sluggish Orlando Magic.

Duncan made 11-of-16 shots from the floor and posted his fourth straight double-double. He and Tony Parker, the youngest player in NBA history, scored eight points apiece during a 22-9 run in the third quarter as the Spurs stretched a four-point lead early in the second half to a 76-59 cushion.

Two nights after scoring just two points on 0-of-8 shooting in a loss at Sacramento, Robinson was 7-of-10 from the field. Malik Rose added 15 points and Danny Ferry was 3-of-3 from the arc and scored 11 for the Spurs, who made 6-of-14 3-pointers.

Parker, who replaced Antonio Daniels in the starting lineup, finished with 12 points and four assists in 32 minutes.

"Tony is showing big-time class and understanding what we do," Spurs coach Gregg Popovich said. "He's very aggressive, he has a lot of energy on defense and offense. He's shown unbelievable composure and confidence in this situation. He's been marvelous out there."

"I just do what coach Pop wants me to do," Parker added. "He wants me to start, I'm going to start. I think the more time I have on the court, the more I'm going to get better."

Tracy McGrady scored 20 points on 7-of-21 shooting for Orlando, which did not look energetic after Monday's double-overtime loss to Seattle.

"I had a lot of energy and I played a lot of minutes last night," McGrady said. "You can't blame it on that. You have to bring it whether you play a lot of minutes or not."

Grant Hill had 17 points and 16 rebounds, Troy Hudson also scored 17 points and Patrick Ewing chipped in 12 for the Magic.

Duncan scored eight points in the opening quarter but made just 2-of-7 free throws. The Spurs could have opened a double-digit lead in the first, but they went 7-of-14 from the line.

San Antonio went on a 17-8 run midway through the second quarter to take a 42-30 lead. Ferry opened the run with a 3-pointer and totaled seven points during the stretch.

But the Magic pulled within a basket with a 12-2 spurt that was fueld by McGrady, who scored eight points. Robinson had 13 in the second to singlehandedly keep the Spurs from relinquishing the lead.

Duncan scored 10 points in the decisive third quarter and Hill nearly matched him with nine but got into foul trouble. He fouled out in the fourth quarter.

"I think a big turning point came when Grant Hill got in foul trouble," Orlando coach Doc Rivers said. "We just ran out of gas, basically, and San Antonio did a good job using that to our advantage."

"The best part of the game was that we competed for 48 minutes," Popovich said. "From beginning to end, we played good team defense, which is something we were remiss in at the beginning of the season."

The Spurs held Orlando to 34 percent (31-of-89) shooting from the floor and 2-of-10 from the arc.

Already without Mike Miller, the Magic played without Pat Garrity, who sprained his right knee in Monday's marathon loss.

"It's tough when you don't have all your shooters on the floor," Rivers said. "Mike Miller and Pat Garrity are out and it's not easy. There's no doubt it hurt us. But it shouldn't be easy when you're trying to achieve something."
