Game Story

DENVER (Ticker) -- Nick Van Exel scored eight of his 23 points in the fourth quarter, leading the Denver Nuggets to their third straight win, 101-93 over the lowly Chicago Bulls.

Van Exel, who is third in the NBA in scoring at better than 27 points a game, made 9-for-22 shots from the field and put away the game in the final period.

The Nuggets never were in control, but the Bulls were unable to capitalize. After Denver squandered an eight-point lead, Chicago managed to stay within four points until the last 2 1/2 minutes.

Denver held a 67-59 lead with 7:51 left in the third quarter, but the Bulls went on a 16-6 run and went ahead for the first time since the opening period, 75-73.

"It was tough," Van Exel said. "We had to fight in the fourth, but we found a way to win.

"I thought everybody was focused during the shootaround. They played hard. They just didn't come out and roll over on us. I thought we played good in stints, but we didn't play good for 48 minutes."

With Denver protecting a 92-88 lead, Van Exel nailed a 10-foot jumper from the right sideline and drew a foul. He completed the three-point play and the Bulls never threatened thereafter, scoring just five points the rest of the way.

The Nuggets also got a big lift off the bench in the fourth quarter from Shawnelle Scott, who scored seven points in 11 minutes. He made two key layups, a jumper and pulled down five rebounds down the stretch.

"Scott was terrific," Nuggets coach Dan Issel said. "He was the only one who didn't let Brad Miller push him around. He gave us a nice lift."

"He was great," Van Exel added. "He defended, got some key rebounds, especially on the offensive said. He did a great job."

Brad Miller scored 25 points on 9-of-14 shooting to pace Chicago, which has lost four straight and fell to 0-3 on the road. Matched up against Scott, however, he scored just four points.

"We had a terrific effort from Brad Miller," Bulls coach Tim Floyd said. "They got a big lift from Shawnelle Scott. We didn't count on him coming in and playing like that. In the fourth quarter, our shot selection was probably more trouble than the turnovers."

"We played two good games the last two games," Issel said. "I told the team in the locker room that we couldn't just show up and win. We played defense like we should in the second half, especially in the fourth quarter."

Former Nugget Ron Mercer added 18 points for the Bulls, who shot just under 44 percent (35-of-80).

Rookies Tyson Chandler and Eddy Curry did not play for the Bulls, who topped the 90-point mark for the first time this season.

"Offensively, we played together. Everyone was finding the open man," Miller said. "We're rebounding well and played good defense. We scored over 90 points for the first time in a while and it felt like we were getting a little bit more offensively."
