Game Story

LOS ANGELES (Ticker) -- Elton Brand showed the Chicago Bulls what they are missing.

Brand victimized his former team by scoring 20 points as the Los Angeles Clippers won their fourth consecutive home game, 106-102 over the Bulls.

The Bulls made Brand the top overall pick in the 1999 draft and he gave them consecutive seasons averaging 20 points and 10 rebounds. But the team did not improve and Chicago traded Brand to Los Angeles for the rights to teenage 7-footer Tyson Chandler, the second overall pick.

So far the advantage in the trade has apparently gone in favor of Los Angeles. Brand is averaging 22 points per game and has led the Clippers in scoring six times.

Chandler, a Los Angeles native, scored just two points in ten minutes and is averaging 3.1 points per game.

The Clippers appeared well on their way to an easy victory as they opened a 95-79 lead with 7:40 to play. But the Bulls went on a 19-2 run and took a 98-97 lead on a 3-pointer by Fred Hoiberg with 1:55 to play.

Rookie Trenton Hassell made three jumpers during the surge, each while being tightly defended by Chicago native Quentin Richardson.

After the teams traded baskets, Brand's jump shot gave the Clippers the lead for good with 1:08 left. Jeff McInnis nailed a 17-footer and Earl Boykins made three free throws to seal the win.

"We just had to gut it out," Brand said. We had to put our best lineup out there and win that game. Earl hit some big free throws. Jeff hit a big shot.

"They gave us quite a scare. We're 4-4. It's the first time I've been .500. It's a small feat for some, but I've never been at .500 in my career."

Brad Miller led Chicago with 19 points and 16 rebounds for his second straight double-double.

"It is always fun to play against old teammates, especially one that you like to play with," Miller said. "Towards the end of last year, I could really understand what he was going through.

"The last three games, we're playing a little better. We've been in the last three games, down to the last couple of minutes. We just have to figure out how to win these games late."

Los Angeles, which was playing its fifth and final game without suspended forward Lamar Odom took a 53-44 lead at halftime and remained ahead until Chicago's late surge.

The Clippers had only won once in the previous 12 games Odom had missed and went 4-1 during this suspension.

His replacement in the starting lineup, Corey Maggette, had another solid game with 14 points on 6-of-12 from the floor.

"I can't believe the improvement Maggette and Quentin Richardson have made in terms of shooting the basketball," Bulls coach Tim Floyd said. "Quentin and Maggette stepped up tonight and Elton did in the second half."

Richardson came off the bench for another solid game. He had 19 points on 7-of-13 shooting and had 15 at the half.

"I thought Quentin did a good job," Clippers coach Alvin Gentry said. "He (Richardson) got in their zone, stepped out and made some good shots. These wins keep on being team efforts.

"Our second unit is the unit that got us going. They came in and did a great job."

Chicago forward Eddie Robinson injured his big left toe in the second quarter and did not return while Los Angeles guard Keyon Dooling suffered a high ankle sprain in the second quarter and also did not come back.
