Game Story

ORLANDO, Florida (Ticker) -- All the Orlando Magic are happy to be home, but perhaps none more than Darrell Armstrong.

Tracy McGrady scored 39 points and Armstrong added a season-high 29, leading a barrage from 3-point range as the Orlando Magic handed the Minnesota Timberwolves their first road loss, 117-106.

The Magic played eight of their first 10 games on the road but host seven of their next nine contests at TD Waterhouse Centre, where they defeated Minnesota for the 10th time in the last 11 meetings.

Orlando got for revenge for Saturday's loss in Minnesota and Armstrong looked like a completely different player. After making just 2-of-12 shots at the Target Center, he made 9-of-13 shots at home.

"I don't know why I haven't shot well in Minnesota," he said. "I changed my shot, I don't know why I changed. Sometimes when it's not broke, I try to fix it. We wanted to send a message back to Minnesota."

Armstrong sank 5-of-9 3-pointers and McGrady nailed 3-of-7 as Orlando made 12-of-27 shots from behind the arc en route to its season high in points.

"I always feel like I can hit a big shot and always love to shoot here," Armstrong said.

The Timberwolves climbed within 107-101 with 1:53 left sparked by nine straight points from Wally Szczerbiak. But Armstrong nailed a 3-pointer and, after a dunk by Joe Smith, Pat Garrity sealed it with another shot from the arc with 60 seconds to go.

"They were playing a zone and extending it out," Garrity said. "We kept moving and Darrell penetrated and found me. That is what you are supposed to so against zones."

McGrady made 13-of-30 shots and collected eight assists and seven rebounds.

Rookie Steven Hunter scored a season-high 13 points and Grant Hill had 11, seven rebounds and six assists before fouling out. Garrity finished with eight points and six rebounds.

"Steven Hunter had a great night, I welcomed him to the NBA tonight," Orlando coach Doc Rivers said. "I think after this game, Minnesota knows who Steven Hunter is."

Smith recorded season highs with 26 points and 12 rebounds and Kevin Garnett had 22 and 13 for the Timberwolves.

Szczerbiak finished with 13 points and Rasho Nesterovic added 12 for Minnesota, which allowed a season high in points and had a three-game winning streak snapped.

"We played hard, but we just did not get over the hump," said Minnesota coach Flip Saunders. "We did not play smart all the time, we tried to do some different things defensively. They just did a better job overall."

McGrady scored 16 points in the first quarter as the Magic scored a season-high 36 points and took a five-point lead heading into the second period.

"I came out and wanted to set the tone," said McGrady. "You could see I was feeling it early. You know Garnett is going to be bringing it and you get up for a game like that. You bring your `A' game or you're going to get embarrassed. And I'm trying not to get embarrassed in my hometown."

Minnesota held a 45-40 lead with 7:46 left in the first half before Orlando went on a 27-9 run to take control for good. The Magic tied it on a 3-pointer by Mike Miller with 7:16 remaining and took the lead for good on Armstrong's technical free throw 37 seconds later.

Armstrong nailed a pair of 3-pointers and scored nine points during the stretch. Hunter added six points.

The Timberwolves trailed, 81-70, with 3:55 to go in the third period but went on a 7-2 run and got within six on a 3-pointer by Anthony Peeler with 2:19 remaining.

Orlando had an 86-80 lead with 1:43 to go and McGrady scored four points in the final 42 seconds of the quarter to make it 93-84 heading into the final 12 minutes.

"Everytime we got close they made big plays," Saunders said. "We had some mental breakdowns."

The Magic used an 8-0 run to build their largest lead, 101-87, with 6:41 left. But Szczerbiak scored seven straight points and nailed a 3-pointer to bring the Timberwolves within 101-94 at the 4:08 mark.
