Game Story

MILWAUKEE (Ticker) -- Ray Allen scored 21 points and nailed a clutch 3-pointer in the final minute as the Milwaukee Bucks extended their winning streak to five games with a 95-88 victory over the Atlanta Hawks.

Milwaukee never trailed after the second quarter and had an 85-79 lead with 3:15 left before Shareef Abdur-Rahim sank a pair of free throws and Jason Terry made a layup to bring the Hawks within a basket.

But Allen, who was suffering from flu-like symptoms, made a 3-pointer from the top of the circle with 49 seconds remaining to give the Bucks an 88-83 lead.

"Ray is capable of doing that," Atlanta coach Lon Kruger said. "He made a tough shot, but he has made a lot of big shots in his career."

Milwaukee made 5-of-6 free throws in the final 32 seconds to improve to 9-1, the second-best start in franchise history. Last season, the Bucks started 3-9 and finished four games behind Philadelphia in the race for the best record in the Eastern Conference.

"We have to take good out of a 9-1 start," Bucks forward Anthony Mason said. "We have areas we have to improve on but starting out 9-1 is a positive. You never want it to come down to the end of the year and you're kicking yourself for not winning those early season games."

Sam Cassell had 18 points and seven assists and Glenn Robinson added 17 and seven rebounds for the Bucks, who have won six straight home meetings with Atlanta and 10 of the last 12 overall.

Abdur-Rahim, who scored a league season-high 50 points Friday, had 23 points and 14 rebounds. Toni Kukoc scored 18 points and Jacque Vaughn added 12 on 5-of-6 shooting for the Hawks, who failed in a bid for a third straight win.

"They wouldn't let me get 50 again," Abdur-Rahim said. "I knew I was going to get a lot of attention tonight. It was really an uphill battle. A lot of their points were off turnovers, we were just sloppy."

The Hawks had a 10-point lead three times in the second quarter and were ahead, 40-30, with 4:21 to go before Allen scored six points during a 12-6 surge that brought the Bucks within 46-42 at halftime.

Milwaukee opened the third quarter with a 14-2 burst led by the red-hot Allen, who scored seven points.

Sam Cassell, who scored four points during the spurt, tied it with a layup at the 10:29 mark before Allen gave the Bucks the lead for good, 48-46, on a pair of free throws with 10:08 to go.

Milwaukee had it largest lead, 56-48, after Mason converted a three-point play with 8:17 left.

The Hawks climbed within 71-70 with 10:27 remaining, but Rafer Alston, who scored 10 points, nailed a 3-pointer followed by a 3-pointer from Robinson.

"We don't try to make these games hard," Robinson said. "We never worry about playing well against good teams, it's the teams we should put away that we have problems with. I'm just happy we're winning these games."

Tim Thomas had 11 points and Ervin Johnson grabbed 14 rebounds for the Bucks, who shot 44 percent (38-of-86) and made 7-of-19 3-pointers. Alston made both his attempts from the arc and Thomas was 2-of-3.

"The way we're playing isn't helping our bench much," Milwaukee coach George Karl said of the excessive use of his bench. "I'm having a hard time trying to build their confidence when I put them in the game and we're down 10 points with no rhythm."

Milwaukee used the 3-pointer to overcome being held to just 14 free throws on its home floor.
