Game Story

ATLANTA (Ticker) -- The New York Knicks are not used to prosperity, especially on the road.

The Knicks nearly squandered a 16-point lead in the final three minutes before holding on for a 105-100 victory over the Atlanta Hawks to complete a sweep of a home-and-home series.

New York, which shot 54 percent (42-of-78) from the field and surpassed the century mark for the first time this season, appeared to be in control when Mark Jackson's jumper made it 98-82 with 3:10 left.

"We played well until the last three, four minutes, where we didn't guard and we turned the ball over and let them get back into the game," New York forward Latrell Sprewell said. "Up until then, we were fine."

"I thought overall our `D' was solid, until the last three minutes," New York coach Jeff Van Gundy said.

The Knicks committed seven of their 13 turnovers in the fourth quarter. Shareef Abdur-Rahim hit 2-of-3 foul shots with 18 seconds left to pull Atlanta within 104-100.

Sprewell, who scored 25 points, made 1-of-2 from the line three seconds later, and Atlanta's hopes ended when Dion Glover missed a jumper on the ensuing possession. The Knicks grabbed the rebound and ran out the clock.

Allan Houston contributed 21 points for New York while Jackson recorded his first double-double of the season with 17 points and 13 rebounds. Kurt Thomas chipped in 15 points.

"I think we did some good things to get a lead," Houston said. "You want to come out on the road and maintain things that you've done to play well to win games. I think a good sign for us is that we came out and treated this game the way it shoud be treated.

New York climbed back to .500 (8-8) with its first three-game winning streak and won for just the second time in nine road contests.

The Knicks also snapped a five-game losing streak in Atlanta, winning at Philips Arena for the first time in five attempts.

"Like I said before, we're the Knicks," Van Gundy said. "We're not going to celebrate at .500."

"It's good for us to put wins together and start playing the way we're capable of playing," Jackson said. "It's a great win for us. It's disappointing to allow 45 minutes of basketball to get away from you in three minutes."

Glover scored 22 points and Abdur-Rahim 20 for the Hawks. Jason Terry helped fuel the comeback with eight of his 15 points in the fourth quarter.

New York improved to 2-0 since Marcus Camby returned after missing the first 14 games of the season with plantar fasciaitis. Camby only scored nine points, but his defense was key down the stretch.

On Monday, the Knicks rallied from a 10-point halftime deficit to post an 88-83 victory over the Hawks. Atlanta scored just 28 points in the second half and picked up where it left off on Wednesday.

"We didn't come out with energy tonight and they beat us to everything," Terry said. "They were agressive and that's why they won the ballgame. We just have to be agressive."

New York grabbed the lead in the first quarter and maintained a double-figure advantage throughout most of the contest but had trouble closing out the victory.

"If we had played the way we had played at the end of the game, the whole game, we probably would have won the game," Glover said. "But we were scratching and fighting at the end to get back in it."

The Hawks made two major runs in the fourth period, cutting a 16-point deficit to 87-81 on Jacque Vaughn's layup with 6:02 left. New York responded with an 11-1 run, but again got careless.

Glover scored nine of Atlanta's next 11 points, including a 26-footer that made it 98-92 with 1:30 left. After Houston made a 13-footer, Terry drilled a 3-pointer to make it 100-95 with 1:06 remaining.

Sprewell converted a pair from the line for a 104-98 lead with 24 seconds left, but the Knicks continued to unravel as Thomas fouled Abdur-Rahim while he was attempting a 3-pointer.
