Game Story

MIAMI (Ticker) -- The New Jersey Nets and Miami Heat each confirmed their current place in the Atlantic Division standings.

Kerry Kittles scored a season-high 27 points and Kenyon Martin added 25 as the Nets posted a 95-86 victory over the struggling Heat.

New Jersey maintained its hold on first place in the Atlantic and moved seven games over .500 (14-7) for the first time since March 1, 1998. The Heat, who won four consecutive division titles from 1996-2000, remained in last place at 4-17.

Jason Kidd had a pair of 3-pointers to trigger a 16-4 run to give New Jersey the lead for good at 66-60 with 4:12 left in the third quarter. Kittles had eight points in the run.

"It just feels good," Kittles said. "You're in a good rhythm and your teammates are looking for you. Jason makes it easy, he's on transition and whenever they are missing the basket, he is pushing it up and you just fill in and makes plays."

Miami could not get any closer than five points in the fourth quarter as the Nets improved to 2-1 on a four-game road trip that concludes with a visit to New York on Sunday. Kidd collected 13 points, 11 assists and seven rebounds.

New Jersey used its athleticism to open an early 15-4 lead with 5:51 left in the opening quarter. Martin had a huge one-handed jam over Alonzo Mourning in the spurt and added a two-handed slam off a feed from Kidd to cap the burst.

"A team like New Jersey, they want to play an open-court game," Miami forward Jim Jackson said. "You give them open shots and fast-break points, they're going to kill you."

The Heat worked their way back into the game in the second quarter and used a 17-6 run, capped by a long 3-pointer from LaPhonso Ellis for a 52-45 advantage with 28 seconds left before halftime. Rookie Richard Jefferson's 3-pointer cut New Jersey's deficit to four points at the break.

"In the first half, the Heat had their way against our defense," Nets coach Byron Scott said. "However, our guys are very intelligent and we adjusted. We played much better and more intense defense and held the Heat to 34 points in the second half."

Kittles made 10-of-18 shots while Martin had six dunks and made 12-of-19 shots.

"We picked up the intensity on the defensive end, limited them to one shot and we were able to run," Martin said.

Jackson, a former Net, led Miami with 24 points and Brian Grant added 12 and 10 rebounds. The Heat shot 51 percent (36-of-70) but matched a season-high with 22 turnovers. New Jersey held a 20-11 edge in fast-break points.

"We got outplayed, outcoached, outmoved, outdunked, out-everything," Miami coach Pat Riley said. "That performance out there was embarrassing. I am embarrassed to have somebody beat me that way."

The victory snapped New Jersey's three-game losing streak in Miami.
