Game Story

DALLAS (Ticker) -- The "Big Three" of the Dallas Mavericks had it going from 3-point range.

Michael Finley, Steve Nash and Dirk Nowitzki combined for eight 3-pointers, leading the Mavericks to a 125-117 victory over the Minnesota Timberwolves, who had their six-game winning streak snapped.

Finley and Nash made three 3-pointers each and Nowitzki hit two for the Mavericks, who were 11-of-21 from the arc as they burned Minnesota's zone defense and set a season high for points.

"We shot it really well from three," Nash said. "Things were clicking and guys were getting open. They were moving the ball and got a lot of open looks and made them."

"All of us were on fire from outside and that was the difference," Nowitzki said. "The 3-point shooting was great and we held them off."

Finley scored 30 points, Nash added 25 and Nowitzki 21 for the Mavs, who had six players in double figures. Tim Hardaway hit three 3-pointers for Dallas, which shot 52.5 percent (42-of-80) from the field and won its third straight game.

"Everybody is finding the open man and everyone is feeling good about each other," Hardaway said. "Everybody is trusting one another on offense and defense. We're having fun right now."

"It was one of the first games we had everyone clicking," Mavs coach Don Nelson said. "I actually expected to have more games like that, a lot more."

Wally Szczerbiak scored 27 points and Kevin Garnett added 23 for the Timberwolves, who had won six in a row by double digits but have lost seven of their last 10 meetings with Dallas.

"The good news is that we get to play them back up at our place on Tuesday night," Minnesota coach Flip Saunders said. "So that's the positive."

A furious first half ended with Minnesota holding a 60-57 lead. Szczerbiak scored 15 points, but Dallas displayed a sign of things to come by making 4-of-9 from the arc.

Finley scored 14 points in the pivotal third quarter, when the the Mavs turned a seven-point deficit into an eight-point lead. In the period, Dallas shot 62 percent (13-of-21), making 4-of-7 3-pointers.

Minnesota made the first two baskets of the period, but Dallas ran off nine straight points, including a layup and 3-pointer from Nowitzki and two hoops from Finley for a 66-64 lead.

The Wolves still were within 72-70 when Finley hit a 3-pointer and converted a three-point play and Nash made a 3-pointer for an 81-72 lead with four minutes to go.

A 3-pointer by Chauncey Billups pulled Minnesota within 103-96 with 7:11 to play. Nash made two free throws and Finley buried a 3-pointer for a 108-96 advantage and the Wolves got no closer than six points thereafter.

"Their big three (scorers) came at us and made big plays," said Saunders. "We had some mental breakdowns."

Juwan Howard scored 19 points and Hardaway added 16 for Dallas, which also made 30-of-35 free throws.

Joe Smith had 15 points and 13 boards for Minnesota, which shot 53 percent (48-of-91), including 4-of-9 from the arc.
