Game Story

PORTLAND, Oregon (Ticker) -- Jerry Stackhouse missed a 3-pointer just before the buzzer as the Portland Trail Blazers escaped with an 83-81 victory over the Detroit Pistons, who suffered their season-high fourth straight loss.

Portland took an 81-66 lead on Ruben Patterson's jumper with 6:05 to go, but Detroit went on a 15-2 run that stretched into the final minute. Dana Barros scored the last seven points of the burst.

"They made shots," Portland coach Maurice Cheeks said. "Sometimes you let your guard down when you have a lead like that. But they were hitting shots and they made some crazy threes."

Portland's Damon Stoudamire lost the ball while driving to the basket with 6.1 seconds left, giving the Pistons one last chance.

"I was surprised they didn't foul," Cheeks said. "We thought they would. I think it kind of threw Damon off on that last shot with them not fouling. It's a learning situation for him."

"We dodged the bullet tonight," Stoudamire added. "I probably should have dribbled it out (on the last play), but what happened, happened."

Stackhouse took too much time looking for a good shot and rushed a 3-pointer from way beyond the arc that smacked off the backboard and the right side of the rim.

"We wanted to put the ball in Stack's hands and wanted to get into a situation where he could drive the ball. And he lost control of it momentarily and then he had no recourse but to try to get something up there," Detroit coach Rick Carlisle said.

Rasheed Wallace scored 22 points and had nine rebounds for Portland, which won for just the third time in 15 games when he is held under 23 points.

Stoudamire added 17 points, six assists and five rebounds and Dale Davis chipped in 13 points and 14 boards for the Blazers, who had a 48-36 rebounding advantage.

"It was important (to rebound well) because we know they are a team that attacks the boards," Davis said. "I thought we did a really good job of pushing the ball up the floor in the second half. The win definitely felt good, no doubt about that."

Detroit, which had not lost four straight games since March 18-27, fell to 0-4 on a five-game western road trip. The Pistons have fallen behind Milwaukee into second place in the Central Division.

Stackhouse had 23 points and seven assists but made just 2-of-8 3-pointers for Detroit. Clifford Robinson added 18 points and Corliss Williamson 14.

"We've had some tough losses on the road trip," Robinson said. "But people have to remain positive and focus on the big picture. You're going to have a bad stretch. It's just a matter of how you handle it."

"We weren't hitting the outside shots tonight," Williamson said. "The key to breaking down the zone is penetration and we struggled with that tonight, so they stayed with it. We have lots of guys who have played in this league for a while. You don't like it, but you've got to fight hard and stick with it."

Portland scored a season-low 34 points in the first half and trailed by five at the break. But the Blazers went on a 19-6 run over the last 6:56 of the third quarter to take a 64-57 lead into the final period.

The Blazers completed a sweep of the season series after winning in Detroit, 100-98, on November 11.
