Game Story

BOSTON (Ticker) -- Hours after Antoine Walker and Paul Pierce were named Players of the Month for December, Kenny Anderson began working on the award for January.

Anderson scored a season-high 19 points -- all in the first half -- in a terrific all-around game as the Boston Celtics cruised to their sixth straight home win, 110-94 over the Orlando Magic.

A former All-Star, Anderson came in averaging just 8.4 points and 5.1 assists. His abilities as a scorer and distributor have been minimized by Walker and Pierce, both scoring forwards who handle the ball extremely well.

"Our system is Pierce and Walker," Anderson said. "You just try and fit in where you can. Somebody has to step up."

Walker and Pierce shared Eastern Conference honors after leading the Celtics to an 11-5 mark in December and they combined for 54 points in this one. But it was Anderson who had the best game of the night.

Anderson made 9-of-16 shots and added seven assists, five rebounds and four steals. He did almost all of his damage in the first half, when Boston posted a season high in points, racing to a 66-50 lead.

"Scoring isn't everything," Anderson said. "I try to do everything -- score, pass, make steals, whatever is asked of me.

"This is probably one of his best offensive and defensive games this year," Pierce said.

"Kenny played great tonight but we need different guys to step up every night," Walker said.

Walker scored 30 points and Pierce added 24 for the Celtics, who shot 54 percent (45-of-84) and have not lost at the FleetCenter since November 23.

"I think we're a very dangerous team," Boston coach Jim O'Brien said. "I thought our intensity level for all four quarters was excellent. We have become a greater team, period. We're playing solid basketball. The thing that is good is I think we have room for quite a bit of improvement."

Pat Garrity scored 19 points for the Magic, who have lost four of six overall and four of five on the road.

"We played like crap, I coached like crap and they beat the hell out of us tonight," Magic coach Doc Rivers said.

After collecting six points and four assists in the first period, Anderson made a 14-footer to give the Celtics the lead for good at 30-29 with 10:56 left in the second quarter.

He found Pierce for a 3-pointer that made it 37-30 and buried a jumper that kept the advantage at 41-34. Anderson made another shot, found Walker for a dunk and scored again for a 48-36 bulge with 5:43 left.

"Our main focus was Antoine and Pierce but any time Kenny got an open shot, he made it," Magic swingman Tracy McGrady said.

In the final minute, Anderson set up Eric Williams for a basket and made a 15-footer before Walker drilled a 35-footer at the horn, extending the lead to 16 points.

"I created shots for my team and myself. There is not much more to it than that," Anderson said.

"Paul and Walker hurt us, but Kenny Anderson killed us in the first half," Rivers said.

Anderson was quiet in the second half, but Walker and Pierce made sure there would be no comeback by Orlando, which erased a 16-point deficit in a win at New York on Sunday. The Magic had just 12 points in the third period and trailed by as many as 24 points.

Vitaly Potapenko had 10 points and nine rebounds for Boston, which also established season highs for points in a quarter (40) and game.

McGrady and Mike Miller scored 15 points each and Darrell Armstrong had 13 assists for the Magic, who shot 46 percent (38-of-83).
