Game StoryDALLAS (Ticker) -- The Dallas Mavericks were well-rested this time.
Dirk Nowitzki scored 29 points and Steve Nash chipped in 14 and 11 assists as the Mavericks pasted the New York Knicks, 111-89.
The victory gave Dallas a split of the season series and a measure of revenge following the team's last meeting. A week ago, Dallas entered Madison Square Garden with a 10-game winning streak but tired in the second half and lost for the 10th straight time in New York.
The Mavericks were playing for the second consecutive night in that contest but had played just once in the last four nights heading into Thursday's matchup.
"Big-time revenge," Mavericks forward Juwan Howard said. "We felt last game we gave it away to them."
"We definitely did not show up," Knicks coach Don Chaney said. "When you don't show up against a team like this with an abundance of shooters who push the ball up the floor, it creates a lot of mismatches. We didn't show up and got killed. That's the bottom line."
Dallas raced to a 29-22 lead through 12 minutes and were up 59-44 at the half. Nowitzki had 18 points and Nash 12 in the opening 24 minutes.
"We didn't have any holes and it was a very good effort on our part," Nelson said. "Everybody played at a high level and everybody got a chance to show what they could do."
Kurt Thomas had 21 points and Othella Harrington 17 for the Knicks, who have dropped four straight since that win against Dallas.
New York was within 11-8 following a Kurt Thomas layup with 8:09 left in the opening quarter. But Nowitzki buried a pair of jumpers around an 18-footer by teammate Johnny Newman. Greg Buckner's basket with 6:06 left extended the Mavericks' lead to 19-8, and Dallas led by seven after 12 minutes.
Nash had eight assists in the quarter while Nowitzki was 5-of-6 from the field.
"I just wanted to be aggressive (early)," Nash said. "I just wanted to come out an make sure I was really aggressive. If not force the issue, close to it. I wanted to come out and push the ball."
New York crept within 31-28 just 88 seconds into the second quarter, but Adrian Griffin had a basket that ignited a 17-3 run, which turned the game into a rout.
Nowitzki and Wang Zhizhi had five points apiece during the run, which Zhizhi capped with a 3-pointer with 4:52 left in the half.
Dallas shot 56 percent (23-of-41) in the opening 24 minutes and committed just six turnovers. New York made 42 percent (18-of-43) of its shots in the opening half but trailed by 15 at the break.
"We played with great energy early," Nowitzki said. "We got the rhythm early, got a couple of easy looks and were able knock down shots."
New York trailed by 23 just over five minutes into the second half and was down 87-67 heading into the final quarter.
"This was one of our best performances of the year," Howard said.
New York fell to 4-12 under Chaney.
If there was a bright spot for the Knicks, it was two more successful free throws for Latrell Sprewell, who tied Kiki Vandeweghe's team record of 34 straight.
