Game Story

ATLANTA (Ticker) -- Coming home was not the solution to the Atlanta Hawks' problems.

Paul Pierce scored 31 points and Antoine Walker had 23 and 10 rebounds as the Boston Celtics cruised to a 115-91 victory over the struggling Hawks, who opened a season-high five-game homestand on a sour note.

Atlanta had played seven of its previous 12 games on the road and has not played more than two straight games at Philips Arena this season. The Hawks had won five of their last seven at home but barely put up a fight against the hot-shooting Celtics.

Boston shot 42 percent (11-of-26) from 3-point range, which was better than Atlanta's 40 percent (34-of-85) overall shooting.

"It was a very, very strong effort," Celtics coach Jim O'Brien said. "I thought we played our second straight solid game in a row. Our guys played with a purpose. They undertsand you have to come and play with a purpose if you expect to win."

Pierce made 4-of-8 3-pointers and Walker drained 3-of-7 from beyond the arc overall.

The Celtics pulled away in the second quarter. Boston was clinging to a 35-33 edge with 8:37 left in the first half when Kenny Anderson scored seven consecutive points. He sank a jumper, completed a three-point play and made a layup before DerMarr Johnson nailed a jump shot for Atlanta.

But Walker followed with a 3-pointer to give the Celtics a 45-35 lead with 6:20 to go.

"When (the Celtics) made the run in the second quarter we didn't do much but just repsond to stay even," Hawks coach Lon Kruger said. "We already had a big deficit at that point, so it did not do much good."

Boston had a 57-45 halftime advantage less than a minute into the third quarter before reeling off nine consecutive points.

Pierce started the burst with a hook and capped it with a 3-pointer to give the Celtics a 66-45 lead with nine minutes left.

Atlanta never got closer than 15 points thereafter, suffering its third straight loss and ninth in 13 games.

Anderson finished with 13 points and Vitaly Potapenko added 11 and nine rebounds for Boston, which won consecutive games for the first time since a three-game winning streak ended December 23.

Eric Williams scored 11 points off the bench and Tony Battie chipped in 10 for the Celtics, who avenged a pair of losses to the Hawks earlier this season.

"Guys took it personal coming into the game," Pierce said. "We felt this is a team we could beat. We just wanted them to know that they won't run over three or four straight games."

Boston dished out 20 assists while committing just nine turnovers.

"When we play unselfish like that, we're tough to beat," Pierce said. "Our offense has really started to come around. We pass the ball real well and when you do that you're hard to beat."

Atlanta's Dion Glover had 19 points and a career-high 11 rebounds for his first career double-double.

Shareef Abdur-Rahim had 17 points and 14 rebounds and Jason Terry added 17 points for the Hawks, who missed their first 14 3-ponters and made just 2-of-18.

"We all have to do better," Abdur-Rahim said. "For us to come out and give one type of effort one night and, 24 hours later, give an effort like this, it's just hard. We didn't give the type of effort you can feel you're respected by."
