Game Story

PHOENIX (Ticker) -- Whatever was ailing the Phoenix Suns was made better by a visit from the Miami Heat.

Shawn Marion scored 21 points in 29 minutes and Rodney Rogers added 14 points off the bench as the Suns snapped a five-game losing streak with their easiest victory of the season, a 108-74 dismantling of the Heat.

Stephon Marbury added 14 points and nine assists for Phoenix, which notched its fifth-largest win in the 10-year history of America West Arena.

"It was just time for it to come, I guess," Marion said. "It came, it came great, so now we've got to keep it rolling."

"Tonight, I came out solely to stop the bleeding," Marbury said. "Whatever it was going to take to win tonight, we had to do it."

Eddie House scored 15 points and Brian Grant added 14 for Miami, which has lost three straight games, fell to 2-12 all time at Phoenix and surrendered its most points since allowing 113 to Atlanta on November 23, 1999.

The Heat are a dismal 8-26, the second-worst record in the NBA. Last season, Miami was 19-15 through 34 games.

"It was just an absolute awful, awful performance," Miami coach Pat Riley said. "Tonight's effort was atrocious. They looked like they had never played together. This is absolutely without a doubt unacceptable. They all know that in this locker room. This game will make your kids not want to go to school on Monday."

"All I know is that we didn't show up tonight," Miami center Alonzo Mourning said. "For whatever reason, collectively, it wasn't a good showing. When you're in the position we're in, you can't afford to have that approach."

Marion scored 10 points and Rogers seven in the opening quarter as Phoenix built a 29-18 lead. The lead was 19 at halftime and the final 24 minutes were little more than garbage time.

"Defensively, we were slow," Grant said. "They got fast breaks and we knew they were a fast-breaking team. They did everything that we told ourselves we couldn't let them do. That's why we got blown out. There's really nothing else to say."

A basket by Kendall Gill with 3:09 left in the opening quarter got Miami within 18-16, but Marbury had a layup 25 seconds later to ignite a 9-0 run. Marion had five points in the spurt.

Phoenix made half its 20 shots in the period while Miami was just 8-of-24 and committed six turnovers.

The Suns pushed the lead to 34-18 just over a minute into the second quarter and were up, 47-28, following Rogers' free throw with 24 seconds left in the half.

Marbury opened the third quarter with a long 3-pointer and the rout was on. Phoenix's lead was 32 points midway through the quarter and Miami trailed, 79-51, after 36 minutes. The Heat got no closer in the fourth quarter and trailed by as many as 39.

Phoenix shot 51 percent (42-of-82), committed just nine turnovers and had 40 points in the paint, twice as many as Miami.

The Heat shot 33 percent (30-of-92) and committed 17 turnovers.

"I personally, and we as a staff, have a lot of respect for Pat Riley and the way he has conducted his business over the years," Suns coach Scott Skiles said. "We are just happy to have a win."
