Game Story

DENVER (Ticker) -- Voshon Lenard scored 27 points and Avery Johnson and Ryan Bowen added 18 apiece as the Denver Nuggets rallied for a 96-90 victory over the Seattle SuperSonics.

The three players helped trigger the comeback for the Nuggets as they combined to score 30 points during a 38-7 spurt in the second half.

The SuperSonics led 56-43 with just under eight minutes remaining in the third quarter when Denver started its run. Johnson capped the burst with a basket that put Denver ahead, 81-63, with 8:30 left in the game.

"That was quite a comeback in the third quarter," Nuggets coach Mike Evans said. "We were very aggressive, we had some guys who layed it out on the line. When you have Avery Johnson, it makes a big difference."

Bowen tallied 11 points over that stretch, Lenard added 10 and Johnson nine as Denver snapped a three-game losing streak overall. The Nuggets did run their winning streak against the Sonics at the Pepsi Center to four games.

"We had a good team effort tonight," Bowen said. "It says a lot for the guys off the bench, especially (Zendon) Hamilton and Lenard."

Gary Payton had 25 points for Seattle, which has dropped just four of its last 11 games overall.

The Sonics held the Nuggets to a season-low 33 points in the first half and built a 13-point lead at the break.

Denver opened the third quarter by scoring the first six points, cutting the deficit to 46-39 before Seattle scored 10 of the game's next 14 points.

After Rashard Lewis' 3-pointer gave the Sonics a 59-48 lead with 4:49 remaining in the period, the Nuggets triggered a 13-2 run over the next 3:11, tying the game, 61-61, on a reverse layup by James Posey.

Posey scored 10 points but made just 5-of-14 shots from the field.

Bowen hit a layup with just over 56 seconds left in the quarter, giving Denver the lead for good as it scored the next eight points.

"That was some fun," Evans said. "That was quite a comeback in the third quarter.

"I had a lot of emotion tonight," Bowen said. "Everyone really played hard."

Seattle went on a 7-0 run to make it 81-70 with 6:42 left in the game and closed within six points, 88-82 with 80 seconds remaining on a 3-pointer by Brent Barry. But the Nuggets defense stiffened and Denver was able to close out the contest.

Barry scored nine points, hitting just 3-of-9 from the floor.

"Transition was the key to this game," he said. "We didn't stick with what was working in the first half. That was transition and rebounding. In the second half, we didn't do either."

The Nuggets outrebounded the Sonics, 55-33, led by Hamilton who had a career-high 16.
