Game Story

INDIANAPOLIS (Ticker) -- The Detroit Pistons nearly let their first road win in six weeks slip away.

Jerry Stackhouse scored 32 points and Clifford Robinson added 27 as the Pistons snapped an 11-game road losing streak with a 93-93 victory over the struggling Indiana Pacers, who have lost four straight games.

Detroit had not won on the road since December 1 at Madison Square Garden. Wins have not come easy for the Pistons, who had lost 13 of their previous 16 games but had a comfortable 58-39 cushion early in the third quarter.

The Pacers rallied behind Jalen Rose, who scored 24 of his 31 points in the second half. He scored 15 points in the third quarter and added nine in the fourth, when Indiana took its first lead since the opening quarter.

"The crowd helped us get back into the game that we took ourselves out of," Rose said. "We've got to find a way to win close games and not get down so deep."

The Pistons had a 79-73 edge with 8:17 left before the Pacers went on a 9-2 run. Rose scored six points during the burst and gave Indiana an 82-81 lead on his jumper with 5:35 to go.

Carlos Rogers followed with a three-point play to give the Pacers their largest lead, 85-81 at 4:34. But Robinson sank a jumper from the right corner to halve the deficit before Rose and Stackhouse traded baskets.

Rose's bucket with 2:01 left gave Indiana an 89-87 lead, but Stackhouse responded with a running jumper 15 seconds later to tie it. Robinson gave the Pistons the lead for good on a short hook shot with 30 seconds left.

"I thought we did a good job of the fact that we let the lead get away from us, not affect us," Robinson said. "We have to play with confidence to be successful. We have to play hard. That's the bottom line, to give ourselves a chance to win."

The Pistons had a 94-91 lead when Reggier Miller missed a 3-pointer with seven seconds left. He got another opportunity to tie the game and was fouled, but his foot was on the 3-point line.

Miller made both free throws to slice the deficit to 94-93 but Stackhouse was fouled and made two free throws with three seconds to play. Jeff Foster's 3-pointer rimmed out at the buzzer and Indiana matched its longest slide of the season.

"It should never come down to that, where you have to make a last-second shot," Isiah Thomas said. "We dug a big hole and then you've got to play perfect to win. Everything has to go your way."

Miller finished with 20 points and eight rebounds and Foster added 13 and nine for the Pacers, who shot 54 percent (38-of-71) but managed just one offensive rebound, setting a new franchise low and tying the NBA mark.

Indiana played without Jermaine O'Neal, who missed his second straight game with an injured left knee. He averages 7.9 rebounds per game, including 2.7 on the offensive end.

"As far as Jermaine is concerned, we miss him," Rose said. "He's our inside game, offense and defense. We've got to learn to get the job done with the players we have on the floor."

Stackhouse and Robinson combined to make 22-of-37 shots for Detroit, which shot 47 percent (34-of-72) and made 9-of-17 3-pointers.

"Cliff and Jerry had huge games from the beginning," Pistons coach Rick Carlisle said. "I wanted the plays to be made around those two guys. I'm just happy for our guys, they've been through a lot in the past month and they deserve this."

Damon Jones scored 13 points off the bench and Corliss Williamson added nine for the Pistons. Ben Wallace was held scoreless but had 11 rebounds and seven blocks.

Robinson scored 17 points in the first half and Stackhouse added 15 as Detroit built a 53-35 lead through 24 minutes. But Indiana shot 62 percent (13-of-31) and scored 31 points in the third quarter, cutting the lead to 70-67 entering the fourth.

"One of the worst things in this league is a large lead at halftime," Stackhouse said. "You know the other team will make a run. The Pacers did that. It came down to a possession. In the past we've had guys hang their heads in key situations. Our guys didn't do that tonight."
