Game Story

OAKLAND, California (Ticker) -- Karl Malone made 16-of-19 free throws and scored 37 points as the Utah Jazz held on for a 101-99 victory over the slumping Golden State Warriors.

Malone continued to rough up the Warriors and so did the Jazz. It was Utah's 26th win in its last 28 meetings with Golden State since November 1994.

"I don't think about it like that," Malone said. "I just try to come out and do what I can do. That's all."

Malone scored 12 points in the final quarter and fell two points shy of his season high established December 8 against the Warriors. The All-Star forward scored 18 points in the first half, 12 on free throws.

"I like the way we played," said Malone, who also pulled down 11 rebounds. "They were getting rough but the guys kept (their) composure and our focus."

Utah's Bryon Russell scored 10 points, including five in the final 15 seconds. With the Jazz clinging to a two-point lead, Russell rebounded Malone's missed jumper and was fouled.

He made both free throws and, after rookie Jason Richardson hit a unner to make it 98-96 with 12 seconds to play, Russell made two more from the line.

Richardson hit a 3-pointer with 2.1 seconds left and Russell again was fouled. This time, he missed the second shot but grabbed his own rebound.

Scott Padgett scored 13 points and John Crotty added 12 for Utah, which shot 32-of-40 free throws.

Antawn Jamison scored 25 points and Larry Hughes added 19 for Golden State, which had six players in double figures but has lost nine of its last 10 games.

"Our defense has really stepped up," Jamison said. "But instead of winning, we are coming up on the other side of games."

The Warriors led 54-50 at halftime, but the Jazz went on a 12-4 run over the first eight minutes of the third quarter. Malone scored six points during the spurt and DeShawn Stevenson added four of his six points.

Utah led 71-68 after three quarters, but Golden State answered with a 14-7 run over the first 5 1/2 minutes of the final quarter, taking an 82-78 lead on Bob Sura's 3-pointer. Sura scored 12 points on 5-of-9 shooting and is averaging 15 points over his last three games.

"We challenged (their toughness) a little bit and didn't let them get second-chance shots," Jazz coach Jerry Sloan said. "I thought we had some hustle plays down the stretch. Fortunately, we were able to make some of those plays and get a win."

John Stockton cut the deficit to two points nine seconds later and Russell hit two free throws with just over five minutes to play, tying the game.

"We played hard and did a lot of good things," Golden State coach Brian Winters said. "(Malone) made some big-time long shots. There's not much you can do about that."

Padgett's three-point play capped a 7-0 run and gave the Jazz the lead for good at 85-82 with 4:57 to play.

Malone made a pair of jumpers around two free throws over the next four minutes, but the Warriors were still within 96-94 after two foul shots by Jamison with 51 seconds remaining.

"We just couldn't pull it out," Hughes said. "It's going to be a fight every night and hopefully, we can pull some of these (games) off."
