Game Story

LOS ANGELES (Ticker) -- The Dallas Mavericks gave new meaning to "balanced attack."

Dirk Nowitzki scored 28 points to lead five players with 19 or more as the Mavericks matched the league season high for points in a 133-112 victory over the defenseless Los Angeles Clippers, their seventh straight triumph.

"It was just a shootout, like old-time basketball from the ABA," Mavericks coach Don Nelson said. "Both teams let her go. It was a fun game to play in, I'm sure."

Juwan Howard scored 27 points, Steve Nash and Tim Hardaway added 20 apiece and Eduardo Najera contributed a career-high 19 for Dallas, which played a practically perfect game on offense.

The Mavericks shot a blistering 58 percent (49-of-85) from the field and 86 percent (24-of-28) from the line. They drilled 11-of-21 3-pointers and committed just eight turnovers.

Dallas tied Sacramento for the most points scored in a game this season. The Kings had 133 against Phoenix on December 23.

As good as the Mavs were, the Clippers almost kept pace. Led by Quentin Richardson, they shot 52 percent (44-of-86) and buried a team-record 14-of-29 3-pointers. But they went cold early in the fourth quarter and were done in by a late run.

"I wasn't discouraged by the way we played," Clippers coach Alvin Gentry said. "They discourage you by the way they shoot the basketball. They are a heck of an offensive basketball team."

The Mavs won for the 10th time in 11 games. All of those have been without injured guard Michael Finley, who averages 20.1 points per game. Dallas has scored at least 110 points six times during that stretch.

"It's amazing what we've done missing our two-time All-Star," Nowitzki said. "We can't wait to get him back to see how much better we'll be."

"We've been able to get a lot of performances out of a lot of different people," Nash added. "We're a better team with Michael, but we've learned to grow while he's not here. We're a tough team when we get hot."

Richardson scored a career-high 31 points, making a club-record seven 3-pointers. But it wasn't enough as the Clippers lost to the Mavs for the 12th straight time.

Elton Brand scored 18 points and Jeff McInnis added 17 for the Clippers, who wasted franchise marks for field-goal percentage and 3-pointers in a quarter.

They embark on a seven-game road trip that begins Tueasday in Dallas and takes them into the All-Star break. Los Angeles (22-22) is just 3-14 on the road.

"I'm looking forward to this road trip," Brand said. "We have to win these games. We have to play as a team and play with some confidence."

After Dallas raced to a 70-58 halftime lead behind 17 points each from Howard and Nowitzki, Los Angeles shot its way back into the game in the third quarter, making 14-of-18 shots.

Eric Piatkowski scored all 15 of his points in the period. A 3-pointer by Richardson gave the Clippers a 95-94 lead with 45 seconds to go, but Nowitzki answered with a three-point play off a jumper.

"When you're seven feet and you can shoot as well as he can shoot, it's pretty tough to stop him," Richardson said.

That ended the period but was the start of a 20-0 burst that carried into the fourth quarter. Howard made a hook, Hardaway drilled a jumper and Nash hit a 3-pointer for a 104-95 lead.

Najera sank two free throws and Hardaway made two 3-pointers around a short jumper by Howard for a 114-95 advantage with 8:31 remaining.

"Whatever we tried, they had an answer for," Gentry said. "We made a run at them, came up with some stops, even got ahead by one. They're so potent offensively that three minutes later we're down by 12."

Hardaway made four 3-pointers and Nowitzki and Nash sank three apiece. Nash handed out 11 assists and Hardaway had nine.

"They are really fun to coach," Nelson said. "I don't even want a day off the way we are playing."

Michael Olowakandi scored 15 points for the Clippers, who shot 51 percent (44-of-86).
