Game Story

MEMPHIS, Tennessee (Ticker) -- An extra five minutes proved worthwhile for the Memphis Grizzlies.

Rookie Pau Gasol scored 23 points and Stromile Swift added 22 as the Grizzlies ended a seven-game losing streak with a 119-115 overtime victory over the Los Angeles Clippers.

"I have said it all year long, we have character on this team," Memphis coach Sidney Lowe said. "We will bounce back after the tough ones. I am very pleased with the team, I am pleased with the whole year."

Memphis had a 98-89 advantage with 2:47 left in regulation before Los Angeles closed with an 11-2 run to force the extra session. Elton Brand, who scored 26 points, capped the run with a three-point play with 26 seconds remaining.

Gasol scored with 3:44 to go in overtime to put Memphis ahead for good at 104-102. He came up with the game's key play 34 seconds later by drawing Brand's sixth foul and making 1-of-2 free throws.

"I really wanted to be on the court trying to spur my team on to victory," Brand said. "The sixth one, I don't think I even touched the guy, but it is up to the referees and you can't complain. Once it's done, it's done."

The Clippers drew within 110-108 on a basket by Darius Miles with 70 seconds remaining. Swift responded with a basket and Brevin Knight drained two free throws for a 114-108 cushion with 32 seconds left.

Michael Olowokandi matched a career high with 27 points for Los Angeles, which has not beaten the Grizzlies on the road since November 16, 2000. The Clippers are just 3-15 away from home this season.

"I am feeling more comfortable, obviously," Olowokandi said. "But it is always a lot better when it turns into a win."

Knight had a huge game with 19 points and 15 assists for Memphis, which placed six players in double figures. Rookie Shane Battier added 20 points and nine rebounds while Rodney Buford netted 17 points.

"Brevin can control the game and give the open players the ball," Lowe said. "He found the open guy, going to his first or second option. Tonight he even went to his third option to find the open guy."

Knight got the start in place of Jason Williams, who did not dress with ingrown toenails on both feet.

The Grizzlies held a distinct advantage at the foul line, converting 29-of-40, including 9-of-11 by Knight.

Los Angeles built a 52-40 halftime advantage behind 14 points from Jeff McInnis. Olowokandi opened the scoring in the second half with a jumper, but Memphis used a 9-2 run to get back in it, cutting the deficit to 58-53 on a basket by Knight with just under eight minutes left.

"They were down by 12 in the first half and we knew they would come out firing," Olowokandi said. "I think we had the mind-set that they would come at us and we would sort of tame them."

Buford's jumper from the left corner with 25 seconds left gave Memphis a 76-75 advantage heading into the final period. Tony Massenburg made two free throws for the Grizzlies' nine-point cushion with 2:47 left.

"They outplayed us in the second half," Clippers coach Alvin Gentry said. "I think Brevin played as well as he can play. He did a great job of keeping everything under control. We just couldn't make shots."

McInnis collected 16 points and eight assists while Quentin Richardson fouled out with 15 points for Los Angeles. Sean Rooks was the third Clipper to pick up six fouls.
