Game Story

INDIANAPOLIS (Ticker) -- Reggie Miller and Jonathan Bender had not hit a basket all game, but they discovered their scoring touch when it counted for the Indiana Pacers.

Miller hit a 3-pointer with 18 seconds left, combining with Bender down the stretch to make four from beyond the arc, as the Pacers rallied from a 13-point deficit with under five minutes left to pull out an 83-82 victory over the Memphis Grizzlies.

The Pacers closed the contest with a 17-3 run as they barely maintained their perfect record against the Grizzlies with a 12th all-time victory.

Miller had missed all seven shots, including three from long range, before the final minute. The most prolific 3-point shooter in NBA history then hit from the left sideline with 57 seconds remaining to cut Indiana's deficit to 82-80.

"It was a double screen designed to get me an open three," Miller said. "I got a good look and I made it."

Following a missed dunk by Grizzlies rookie Shane Battier and a shot-clock violation by the visitors, Miller nailed a 3-pointer to give Indiana the lead.

"Since we were only down two, I was supposed to take an open two and if that wasn't there, look inside for Jermaine (O'Neal) to try and get a basket or a foul," Miller said. "But we had played terrible for 47 minutes and there was no way we were going to overtime with this team. So I took the three."

Brevin Knight missed an open jumper on Memphis' final chance.

Bender hit from the right corner to slice the deficit to 79-71 with 3:21 to go. He also sank a 3-pointer with 2:14 left, cutting it to 81-76 and forcing the Grizzlies to call timeout. The third-year forward had attempt just three shots before the final 3 1/2 minutes.

"That's what got us ignited and got us going," Pacers coach Isiah Thomas said of Bender's shots.

Indiana's Jalen Rose scored 15 of his 25 points in the opening 12 minutes, making all four shots from the field and six from the line.

Battier scored 27 points and fellow rookie Pau Gasol collected 18 and 13 rebounds for the Grizzlies, who lost for the eighth time in their last nine games.

"This was a tough one to swallow," Battier said. "The game came down to the last shot and a guy named Reggie Miller made a big shot. He's been doing that his whole career."

Memphis opened a 79-66 cushion with 4:55 left when Battier hit a 3-pointer. Just under a minute later, Travis Best sank a jumper from 20 feet to reduce the deficit to 11.

Making his first start of the season, Best also collected five assists and a season-high five steals. He took the place of rookie point guard Jamaal Tinsley, who missed the game due to a sore left hip.

Gasol missed a layup and Bender grabbed the rebound with 3 1/2 minutes remaining.

"It came down to two big-time 3-pointers; two big shots that Reggie Miller made," Gasol said. "We didn't score in our last possessions. We just let the game go away from us and it was a pity for that to happen."

Bender was rewarded with a feed from Miller at the other end of the court and hit from 3-point range.

Battier's shot with just over three minutes remaining restored the Grizzlies' double-digit lead, 81-71.

Rose responded with a basket. Knight missed a jumper, Rose collected the rebound and found Bender for his second 3-pointer.

"We played extremely hard, except for in the last three minutes. I thought we slowed down," Grizzlies coach Sidney Lowe said. "Reggie did his job. He's known for the cluth shot and he came through."

Following the timeout, Knight committed a turnover and Gasol committed his third foul, putting All-Star O'Neal on the line. He made 1-of-2, pulling Indiana within 81-77.

Gasol got to the line with just over a minute left and hit his first free throw. But the Spaniard missed his second, crucially failing to give the Grizzlies a two-possession advantage.

That provided Miller yet another opportunity for pull out a win for the Pacers with his long-range shooting.

"He got interested," Thomas said. "In a game, no matter if he's 0-of-7 or 0-of-9, he pushes a button and another guy comes out. He's special at the end of the game. I don't think I've ever seen anyone make as (many) clutch shots as he has, time and time and time again."

After Indiana took a 41-39 lead into the locker room, Memphis scored the first 10 points of the second half. That propelled the Grizzlies to a 66-54 advantage after three quarters.
