Game Story

ORLANDO, Florida (Ticker) -- Pat Garrity and the Orlando Magic cooled off just about the time Shaquille O'Neal, Kobe Bryant and the Los Angeles Lakers heated up.

The Magic missed 10 straight 3-pointers in the second half, when the Lakers put together a 25-4 burst and rolled to a 111-93 victory.

O'Neal had 30 points and 14 rebounds in a dominant performance against his former team and Bryant added 23 and eight as the Lakers erased an 11-point third-quarter deficit and defeated the Magic for the seventh straight time.

"We just waited until the end of the third, beginning of the fourth until we picked up our defense a little bit," O'Neal said. "In the first half, they shot the lights out of the ball, but we knew we had a chance. They weren't shooting the same in the second half."

Garrity scored 22 points, making 6-of-13 3-pointers and posting career highs for makes and attempts from the arc. But he went cold in the third quarter and his teammates did with him.

"It wasn't like we were changing anything," Garrity said. "But I think when you start missing those shots, it deflates you a lot faster than if you take the ball to the basket."

"I thought we had too many guys hanging their heads," Magic coach Doc Rivers said. "You have to assume the world champions are going to make a run."

Devean George scored 13 points and Rick Fox and Brian Shaw added 12 apiece for the Lakers, who improved to 2-1 on their five-game road trip.

"We had a good defensive stand in the fourth quarter, which made up for the fact that we were on our heels for much of the night," Lakers coach Phil Jackson said. "They went cold at the inappropriate time."

Garrity scored eight straight Orlando points in a 12-5 run that gave the Magic a 63-52 lead with 9:02 left in the third period. Orlando still held a 75-68 lead before the Lakers closed the quarter with a 7-2 surge.

"It's what we've come to expect," Bryant said. "Somebody's going to catch fire. Tonight, it was Garrity. He came out and hit shots from everywhere but you just got to accept that, embrace that and play through it."

Bryant, who struggled through the first three quarters, scored eight points in an 18-2 run that opened the final period. O'Neal, who sat for most of the pivotal run, ended it with three free throws for a 93-79 lead with 5:37 left.

"I thought (Bryant) had a nice fourth quarter," Jackson said. "He was struggling a little bit out there, instead of just letting his game come to him."

"I had a chance to talk to my teammates at the start of the fourth period and my message was, `Just relax, we're down seven and they're playing well and we're not,'" Bryant said. "We've been in this situation before, so it was important just to calm down, stay in the moment and play."

O'Neal added two more hoops to make sure the Magic got no closer than 11 points down the stretch. The Magic's former franchise player made 13-of-19 shots.

"It's always been a great place to play," said O'Neal, who still owns a huge home in the area. "The fans have always been behind their team. It's always been a very loud place to play."

The Lakers shot 47 percent (41-of-88) and held a 51-39 edge on the boards. They limited Orlando to 40.5 percent (34-of-84).

"I thought we got tired, especially out shooters," Rivers said.

Tracy McGrady scored 22 points and Mike Miller added 13 for the Magic, who shot a season-high 31 3-pointers, making 11. They were just 4-of-16 from the arc in the second half.

Garrity scored 14 points in the first half, offsetting 19 by O'Neal and giving Orlando a 51-47 halftime lead.
