Game Story

SAN ANTONIO (Ticker) -- Michael Olowokandi had 20 points and 12 rebounds and Elton Brand added 19 and 14 as the Los Angeles Clippers ended one streak and extended another as they beat the San Antonio Spurs, 91-87.

The Clippers led 85-83 before Olowokandi was fouled and sank a pair of free throws with 52 seconds left. Tim Duncan responded with a banked jumper with 37 seconds to go, but Olowokandi caught an inbounds pass at halfcourt and found Brand, who scored on a dunk with 34 seconds remaining.

After Terry Porter hit a pair of free throws to get the Spurs within 89-87 with 29 seconds left, Jeff McInnis missed a jumper and San Antonio collected the rebound and called timeout.

Duncan drove the lane but Darius Miles came from the weak side to block his shot in the lane, and McInnis grabbed the loose ball, was fouled and sank a pair of free throws with less than a second to go.

"It was a great win against one of the elite teams in the league," Clippers coach Alvin Gentry said. "I felt good about the way we played and I felt good about the way we played down the stretch. I thought we did a good job of keeping our composure."

Los Angeles limited San Antonio to just 40 percent shooting (34-of-85), including 2-of-10 from the arc, in snapping a 15-game losing streak against the Spurs. It was the Clippers' first win against the Spurs since December 4, 1997, and extended San Antonio's home losing streak to four games.

The Clippers had not won in the Alamodome in their last nine trips here since a victory on January 5, 1997.

"I can't remember the last time we beat these guys -- never mind at home, here in their place," said Olowokandi, who was playing for the University of the Pacific the last time the Clippers defeated the Spurs. "Our guys played hard, we had an early lead, and we just kept on fighting. It's been a trademark of this team."

Los Angeles led 69-61 late in the third quarter before San Antonio went on a 10-0 run that was capped by a layup by Antonio Daniels with 10:19 to go. Neither team led by more than four points the rest of the game.

"What I've been most pleased with is our defense," Gentry said. "We didn't give up a lot of second shots."

Even though the Spurs outrebounded the Clippers, 50-43, San Antonio only registered 16 second-chance points, five more than Los Angeles.

"I thought we played great `D,' made a lot of stops down the stretch that we needed to make, to give ourselves an opportunity to win the game," San Antonio coach Gregg Popovich said. "But we just had trouble knocking it down."

Quentin Richardson scored 18 points and McInnis chipped in 15 for the Clippers, who improved to 2-1 on their season-high seven-game road trip. It was just their fifth win in 20 contests away from the Staples Center this campaign.

Duncan had 23 points and 16 rebounds and Malik Rose added 15 and 11 for the Spurs, who had not lost four in a row at the Alamodome since their final four home contests of the 1996-97 season -- the year before Duncan joined the team.

"This is the most frustrating time I've been through," Duncan said. "In the same respect, we're going to turn it around."

"We have not put ourselves in this position too often," said David Robinson, who had just eight points in 27 minutes and was on the bench down the stretch. "Right now we're just scrambling to get our identity back. We're not making stops when we need to."
