Game Story

WASHINGTON (Ticker) -- With three key players sidelined, the Washington Wizards got the lift they needed from some unlikely faces.

Tyrone Nesby scored a season-high 12 points and made a clutch defensive play in the closing seconds as the shorthanded Wizards held on for a 97-90 victory over the struggling Atlanta Hawks.

Guard Richard Hamilton, Washington's second-leading scorer, came off the injured list Wedenesday. But Hubert Davis was sidelined with the flu and center Jahidi White served a one-game suspension for head-butting Zydrunas Ilgauskas in Thursday's win at Cleveland.

The Wizards, who are also without starting forward Christian Laettner due to injury, received numerous key performances from unexpected places instead of relying on Michael Jordan to carry the load.

"For us to be good, everbody's got to give a little piece of themselves so it all fits together so we can be a team," Wizards coach Doug Collins said. "When we miss pieces, other guys have to step up and fill in. You might think you're buried on the bench, but a case of the flu and a sprained ankle, and you're playing 30 minutes."

"They have been waiting their turn," Jordan said. "Waiting for when they can get on the court and show they deserve to be on this team."

After Courtney Alexander scored 12 of his 14 points in the first half, Nesby scored six points in the third quarter, all during an 11-2 run Washington used to close the period.

The Hawks scored eight consecutive points to pull wihtin 57-54 on All-Star Shareef Abdur-Rahim's jumper with 7:48 left in the third. They climbed within 65-63 just over three minutes later before Nesby sank consecutive 18-footers.

Jordan made 1-of-2 free throws and made a basket after a pair of free throws by Hamilton for a 74-63 lead with 94 seconds left. Atlanta scored before Nesby buried another long jumper to give Washington a 76-65 edge entering the fourth period.

Atlanta again rallied in the final period, closing within 89-88 on Abdur-Rahim's driving hook shot with 2:08 left. But Nesby sank a pair of free throws 22 seconds later before Chris Whitney hit a jumper over Jacque Vaughn with 70 seconds left.

The Wizards had a 93-88 lead when Nesby played excellent defense on Abdur-Rahim, forcing him to lose the ball and causing a 24-second violation. Hamilton and Popeye Jones each made a pair of free throw to seal Washington's fourth win in five games.

"The key guy tonight was Nesby," Jordan said. "He played Shareef pretty well. It's one of those games where you've just got to gut it out."

Jordan finished with 28 points and eight assists and rookie Etan Thomas provided the Wizards with a surprising lift off the bench, collecting season highs of nine points and 10 rebounds.

"Coach kept telling me it was going to pay off," Thomas said. "Sometimes it is frustrating, working hard and not playing, but he told me just keep working hard and you're going to get a chance."

Washington shot just 45 percent (37-of-82), including 1-of-8 3-pointers but committed a season-low five turnovers.

Abdur-Rahim finished with 25 points and Nazr Mohammed added 15 and 13 rebounds for the Hawks, who have lost six straight games.

"We got right back in there and just quite couldn't get a stop at a critical stage or a bucket at a critical stage to get over the hump," Hawks coach Lon Kruger said. "We fought to get right there, and didn't finish."

"We're just trying to continue despite the adversity we have," Abdur-Rahim said. "Just trying to continue to play hard and continue to get better. We have to do a better job of finishing games. When we put ourselves in a situation like we did tonight, we have to do a better job of finishing them out and winning them. We were right there."

Jason Terry scored 15 points and Vaughn finished with 12 off the bench for Atlanta, which shot 49 percent (36-of-73) but turned the ball over 19 times, leading to 27 points for Washington.
