Game Story

MINNEAPOLIS (Ticker) -- Kevin Garnett provided the fans with something to drink, and then gave them something to cheer about.

Garnett collected 33 points, 13 rebounds and six assists as the Minnesota Timberwolves opened the second half with a 107-92 victory over the Phoenix Suns.

In an effort to improve the environment at the Target Center, Garnett commented earlier this season that the Timberwolves should give away free drinks to the fans. On Wednesday, he put his money where his mouth is, providing coupons for free drinks to the first 10,000 fans.

"I thought it would be a cool thing," Garnett said. "I don't think anyone has bought the fans something. You have a lot of giveaways, with posters and basketball cards, but this is a little different.

"I love our fans. This is just my way of giving back, and letting them know that I actually care about them and hear their screaming and booing the other guys. That's why we have a home-court advantage."

After providing the fans with refreshments, the All-Star forward followed by delivering a victory. He made 11-of-20 shots from the floor, 11-of-12 free throws and collected two blocks and two steals as Minnesota improved to 21-3 at home.

The Timberwolves never trailed in the first two quarters and had a 56-46 lead 50 seconds into the second half before the Suns rallied. Shawn Marion proivded half the offense during a 12-2 run and Phoenix tied it at 58-58 on his layup with 7:17 remaining.

The teams traded baskets twice before All-Star Wally Szczerbiak made a runner to give Minnesota the lead for good and spark a 12-2 run. Szczerbiak, who scored 14 points, capped the burst with a layup to give the Timberwolves a 74-64 cushion with 71 seconds to go.

Phoenix climbed within 77-71 with 8:51 to play, but Minnesota scored 16 of the next 23 points highlighted by six from Garnett.

The Timberwolves had their largest lead, 107-88 after a layup by Joe Smith with 57 seconds left. Smith scored nine of his 19 points in the fourth quarter as Minnesota won for just the fourth time in 10 games.

The Timberwolves shot 47 percent (39-of-83) and made 26-of-29 free throws. They outscored the Suns, 46-28 in the paint and 28-12 on the fast break.

Anthony Peeler scored 17 points off the bench and Billups finished with 16 for the Timberwolves, who placed starting point guard Terrell Brandon on the injured list prior to the game.

"I'm going to try to take advantage of the situation and make sure this team keeps on trucking," said Billups, who will inherit Brandon's starting spot. "We don't have to use two or three games to get comfortable. Everybody knows how I play and I know what everybody else does."

Brandon will undergo arthroscopic surgery on his left femur next week and may be lost for the season.

"Terrell is done at least for now," Minnesota coach Flip Saunders said. "It's now an opportunity for other people to stand up. Everybody has to step it up a notch. You lose guys and you don't like it but you have to move on."

Marion finished with 24 points and 15 rebounds and Stephon Marbury added 15 points and 11 assists against his former team as the Suns completed a 2-2 road trip.

"We could've won this game," Marion said. "It was in our hands to grab, and we let it slip out of our hands. They took us out of the things we wanted to do a little bit."

Jake Tsakalidis chipped in 11 points for Phoenix, which was held to 42 percent (34-of-80) shooting and committed 16 turnovers leading to 23 points for Minnesota.

"I thought we moved the ball well and had good looks all over the place," Phoenix coach Scott Skiles said. "We just had trouble making them and we had a lot of trouble stopping them. We didn't have an answer."
