Game Story

PORTLAND, Oregon (Ticker) -- Rasheed Wallace scored 24 points and Bonzi Wells added 22 as six Portland Trail Blazers reached double figures in a 114-103 victory over the Dallas Mavericks.

The win extended the Trail Blazers home winning streak to six games and snapped the Mavericks team-record eight-game road winning streak.

"We lost three straight before the (All-Star) break and we were down on ourselves," Wallace said. "But we started with a clean slate. We're 1-0 and it's a new season."

"Dallas is a great offensive team," Wells said. "We just wanted to be aggressive. If we get together, we can beat anybody. This was big for us because Dallas is playing kind of well."

Damon Stoudamire scored 19 points, Dale Davis 15, Scottie Pippen 13 and Shawn Kemp 10 for the Blazers. Davis also recorded his 1,000th career blocked shot in the second quarter.

Dirk Nowitzki led Dallas with 27 points and eight rebounds.

The Blazers capitalized on 15 Dallas turnovers, turning them into 18 points.

Portland improved to 38-8 at home all-time against the Mavs, including winning 11 of the last 12.

"I don't look at history," Dallas coach Don Nelson said. "But I bet we're not alone. And besides, everybody has beaten us 11 out of 12 times. We haven't won a game in 10 years. We won last night and we lost tonight. So we are 1-1 on the road after the All-Star break. That's something to write about."

Wells recorded a career-high nine assists and grabbed eight rebounds, falling two short of his first career triple-double.

"It was big," said Wells referring to his nine assists. "I'm starting to read the defense a lot better. What better way to win than pass the ball to the guys."

The Blazers led by nine at halftime but Dallas got within 87-82 at the end of the third quarter. Juwan Howard and Tim Hardaway combined for 18 of the Mavericks' 23 points in the quarter.

Howard and Hardaway scored 19 points apiece.

"We beat ourselves," Howard said. "We started to come back in the third but in the fourth, we showed fatigue and missed our shots. They killed us on the boards."

Led by Davis, Portland held a 45-27 rebounding advantage, including an 11-2 bulge on the offensive boards.

"Defense wins games," Blazers coach Maurice Cheeks said. "And what you saw tonight -- our getting out on the break, controlling the boards and getting easy baskets in transition -- was all a result of our defense."

"We're not a strong rebounding team anyway," Nelson said. "We didn't pursue the ball very well, I didn't think, and they did. And that's probably why they won the game."

Nowitzki hit a 23-foot jumper from the left side to cut the Mavericks deficit to 94-91 with 9:20 left. But the Blazers used a 17-6 run, capped by a 3-pointer by Wallace to open a 110-97 lead with 2:48 remaining.

"(Wallace) is an exciting player," Howard said. "He's the type of guy who always comes out and gives it all he's got."

Both teams shot well from the free-throw line as Dallas hit 20-of-22 and Portland was 20-of-24.
