Game Story

LOS ANGELES (Ticker) -- Tim Duncan and David Robinson occasionally show why they should still be considered the most formidable frontcourt duo in the league.

Duncan collected 15 points and 11 rebounds and Robinson had 12 points and seven blocks and the duo dominated the third quarter to lead the San Antonio Spurs to their seventh straight road win over the Los Angeles Clippers, 89-76.

Although Duncan continues to produce at a high level, a sub-par season by Robinson is evidence that the future Hall of Famer's career may be winding down. But when both big men produce, the Spurs are extremely effective on both ends of the floor.

After a slopppy first half by both teams, San Antonio made 12-of-18 shots in the third quarter while Los Angeles remained in its funk, shooting only 33 percent (8-of-24).

"We shut them down in the second half," Robinson said. "It has to be our defense, if we don't take pride in that then we're not going to play the way we play. "

Robinson recorded three blocks in a span of 47 seconds early in the quarter before combining with Duncan to provide all the offense during a 12-0 run.

"We were a little more aggressive (in the third quarter)," Duncan said. "David was the one who got us going and then we started knocking down shots. But David's defense was the key in the quarter."

"David Robinson was a monster tonight," Spurs coach Gregg Popovich said. "They key to the game was that we played really good defense for 48 minutes."

Duncan opened the burst with a dunk to forge a 45-45 tie with 9:40 to go before Robinson sank a baseline jumper to give the Spurs the lead for good.

Duncan followed with consecutive jump shots and a pair of free throws before Robinson capped the run with a layup to give San Antonio a 55-45 cushion with 6:49 remaining.

The Clippers pulled within 55-49 on a dunk by Darius Miles 75 seconds later, but Steve Smith responded with six straight points for the Spurs. Robinson followed with a dunk for a 63-49 cushion with 3:03 left.

Terry Porter's 3-pointer gave San Antonio a 69-57 advantage heading into the fourth quarter and Los Angeles got no closer in the final 12 minutes.

"The third quarter really did us in," Clippers coach Alvin Gentry said. "We couldn't come up with baskets and that is where they got seperation and that's when we got outscored, 30-17."

Rookie Tony Parker, Charles Smith and Malik Rose scored 10 points apiece for the the Spurs, who remained unbeaten against the Clippers in Los Angeles since December 4, 1997.

San Antonio has won 26 of the last 33 meetings with Los Angeles and 16 of the last 17.

Los Angeles shot just 35 percent (30-of-84) and was held to its lowest total since scoring 70 points at the Alamodome on January 31, 2001.

Eric Piatkowski scored 17 points and Michael Olowokandi added 15 and 12 rebounds for the Clippers, who have lost four of their last five games.

Corey Maggette had 14 points, nine rebounds and four steals, but All-Star forward Elton Brand was held to a season-low three points on 1-of-10 shooting.

"I was trying really hard to win this game," Brand said. "I couldn't hit my shots and then I got in foul trouble. I was just off tonight."
