Game Story

CHICAGO (Ticker) -- Aaron Williams scored a season-high 23 points off the bench, leading six players in double figures, as the New Jersey Nets recorded an easy 106-81 victory over the Chicago Bulls.

Williams, who was raised in Chicago, was 10-of-12 from the field in 28 minutes as the Nets snapped their season-high three-game losing streak.

"It was most important that we got a win," Williams said. "It was nice to come home and play well in front of family and friends, but the win is what we really needed tonight."

Williams also pulled down nine rebounds.

"Aaron played great tonight," Nets coach Byron Scott said. "He was good defensively and also had the hot hand tonight."

New Jersey set a franchise record by allowing just 24 points in the first half as Chicago made just nine shots from the floor in 37 attempts.

"You like to get off to a good start every night and it was a good thing that we were able to do that," Williams said. "They were playing a little shorthanded tonight with some of their starters out and we were able to take advantage of that."

"I thought in the first half that we just could not get it in sync offensively," Chicago coach Bill Cartwright said. "We started the game really poorly as far as executing and moving the ball. We had the open shooters, we were just really out of sync."

The Bulls were without center Brad Miller, who was sidelined with a strained left calf, and guard Eddie Robinson, who has a strained left groin.

Kerry Kittles and Jason Kidd scored 16 points apiece, Richard Jefferson added 15, Keith Van Horn 12 and Lucious Harris 10. Jefferson started in place of Kenyon Martin, who was sidelined with a bruised right forearm.

"Everyone helped each other out," Kittles said. "This win was very good for the morale of the team. The guys had gotten down after the way we had played since the break."

"Whenever we're missing someone, we come out with a greater sense of what we need to do," Jefferson said. "We're still a young team and don't have much playing experience. But now, we're going to get back into a groove."

Ron Artest scored 21 points and rookie Trenton Hassell added 20 for Chicago, which is just 2-8 in its last 10 home games.

New Jersey led by 16 at halftime but allowed Chicago to get within 57-48 on a basket by Artest with 5:46 left in the third quarter.

But the Nets closed the quarter with a 19-10 run sparked by eight points from Williams.

"We made a run then they had a timeout and got their own run," Hassell said. "They are a good team and they really took advantage of their runs."

New Jersey, which never trailed, led by as much as 99-73 on a 3-pointer by Kittles with 3:05 left in the contest.

"This is the way we're supposed to play and we all understand that," Kidd said. "We weren't concerned with the three-game losing streak, it was the way we were playing that concerned us."
