Game Story

MEMPHIS, Tennessee (Ticker) -- Shawn Marion scored 18 points as the Phoenix Suns shut out the injury-depleted Memphis Grizzlies for the final six minutes and earned interim coach Frank Johnson his first victory, 78-72.

Memphis, which played without Jason Williams and Grant Long and lost Brevin Knight and Tony Massenburg to injuries during the game, still led, 72-65, after Elliot Perry made a layup with 6:01 remaining.

But Stephon Marbury began the 13-0 game-ending run with a steal and layup and tied the game with another layup with 1:35 left. Tom Gugliotta gave the Suns the lead for good on a three-point play with 1:05 remaining.

The Grizzlies held a 66-61 advantage entering the fourth quarter but were limited to just six points in the final 12 minutes, the lowest-scoring quarter in franchise history. Their previous low was seven points, recorded three times, most recently on March 1, 1998, in the first quarter of a game against Atlanta.

The previous franchise record for fewest points in the fourth quarter was nine, set against Philadelphia on December 9, 2000.

"We only scored six points in the fourth quarter," Grizzlies coach Sidney Lowe said. "It was just poor decision-making on our part. We didn't see the reads. We had some wide open guys and nobody saw them. I thought we played hard, we just didn't play smart."

Marion made 9-of-19 shots and added three steals for Phoenix, which snapped a four-game skid and earned Johnson his first win in three tries since Scott Skiles resigned on Sunday.

Marbury shot just 6-of-18 but added 13 points and rookie Joe Johnson, who was acquired in a trade with Boston on Wednesday, had 11.

"I wasn't upset at all about the trade," Johnson said. "I started off in Boston pretty good, but all of a sudden I'm not getting any playing time, so I didn't know what the deal was. I'm coming to a city with good weather and I have good teammates. I think I'll be happy."

The Suns acquired Johnson, Milt Palacio, Randy Brown and a 2002 first-round draft pick for reserves Tony Delk and Rodney Rogers.

Johnson added three steals, three rebounds and three assists in 24 minutes, while Palacio scored six points in 11 minutes.

"This feels great," Frank Johnson said of his first victory. "It's nice to get a win with the new guys contributing. They weren't allowed to practice -- they had to sit on the side and watch. I'm impressed with Joe, he's got good hands and he's very composed on the court. He's a playmaker and Milt comes in and playes great defensively. He knows when to dig and when not to."

The Suns have won 22 of 27 all-time matchups with the Grizzlies, including three of four this season.

Rookies Shane Battier and Pau Gasol scored 15 points apiece for Memphis, which has dropped eight of 10.

"We did a good job the first three quarters but we played pretty bad in the fourth," Gasol said. "They picked up their defense and we kept giving them the ball too many times. It's tough when we lose our top two guards, it makes the whole game more difficult."

Williams sat out the second half of the team's loss at San Antonio on Wednesday after aggravating an injury to his right big toe that had sidelined him for eight games between January 28-February 14. He did not dress for this one.

Knight played 26 minutes but left the game with 6:37 left in the third quarter with severe cramping in his left thigh. He did not return.

"That was a tough game," Lowe said. "We didn't have enough guys out there to play. We got tired at the end because we didn't have the numbers. Guys are having to play some roles they're not accustomed to playing and mainly they're not ready to play."

Massenburg, who played just seven minutes, exited early in the second quarter after straining his right calf.

"With only seven people, I think we just ran out of gas," said Lorenzen Wright, who had 12 points and 12 rebounds. "When we get our whole team back together, it's going to be trouble for some teams. We just have to hold on as long as we can until we can't get everybody back."

Memphis led by as many as 25-11 in the first quarter before Phoenix scored the last four points of the period. The Grizzlies took a 43-42 edge into halftime.

"You just have to go with what you got, and if you don't have it, you don't have it," Battier said. "I've never seen anything like it in all of sports. I think we need a Blarney Stone or something in here."
