Game Story

PORTLAND, Oregon (Ticker) -- Rasheed Wallace scored 20 points as the Portland Trail Blazers extended their winning streak to four games with an 94-79 victory over the Atlanta Hawks.

Portland never trailed as guard Derek Anderson scored the first six points of the contest. The Trail Blazers led 24-14 after one quarter and 51-32 at halftime.

The 14 first-quarter points matched a season low for Atlanta, which also did it against Washington on December 19.

In the first half, Portland shot 54 percent (20-of-37) from the field and limited Atlanta to 30 percent (14-of-46).

"Tonight we played another great half of defense," Blazers coach Maurice Cheeks said. "Our defense has been consistent in the last month and a half. That has been the difference in our team. In the first half, our defense was phenomenal."

"We told ourselves that when we got here to the arena, `Let's come out with a lot energy,'" added forward Shawn Kemp. "That's the one thing we did. If we continue to that, I think we're going to make things a lot easier for ourselves."

Wallace had just five points at intermission but got hot in the third period, when he scored 13 points on 5-of-8 shooting.

The Hawks tried to rally in the fourth quarter, pulling within 79-67 with 7:08 remaining following Wallace's 20th technical foul of the season.

However, Dion Glover and Jacque Vaughn missed jumpers that could have reduced the deficit to single digits. Atlanta missed 14 of its final 18 shots and finished at 36 percent (28-of-78).

Wallace made a short jumper that sparked a 10-2 run to push the lead to 89-69 with 4:02 left. Bonzi Wells, who added 18 points, capped the burst with a thunderous dunk.

"Tonight we were able to get guys open shots," Portland guard Damon Stoudamire said. "We were cutting real well, moving the ball and getting open shots. That was the key to this game."

The Blazers also asserted themselves on the boards. They outrebounded the Hawks, 19-7, in the fourth period and 54-37 for the game.

Forward Dale Davis led Portland with 14 boards for his 24th double-digit performance of the season.

Jason Terry scored 21 points and All-Star Shareef Abdur-Rahim added 19 for the Hawks, who fell to 2-2 on their six-game road trip. Terry had just one point on 0-for-4 shooting in the decisive opening quarter.

Abdur-Rahim was the only offensive threat, scoring seven points in the first quarter. As the game wore on, he was constantly hounded by multiple defenders and had just two points in the final period.

"Reef is getting a lot of attention right now," Atlanta coach Lon Kruger said. "So we need other guys to step up and help a little bit because people double him and there'll be a crowd in the lane every time he touches it. So we've got to move the ball and step up and make some shots to get the pressure off Reef."

The Blazers also avenged a 101-92 defeat in Atlanta on January 8. Abdur-Rahim and Terry combined for 54 points in that game.

"They had some payback to give after we them earlier this season," Terry said. "Beating a team like Portland at home is tough. To beat a team like the Blazers, you have to fight and compete for four quarters. Tonight we didn't come out ready to play."

Portland is 17-6 since dropping a season-high five games below .500 following a loss to Toronto on January 2.

With the win, the Blazers (30-24) are a half-game behind Utah for the sixth seed in the Western Conference.
