Game Story

INDIANAPOLIS (Ticker) -- The Indiana Pacers received solid contributions from their newcomers, but they could not overcome the absence of Reggie Miller.

Playing their first game since Tuesday's seven-player trade, the Pacers missed a chance to reach .500 and suffered a 103-93 loss to the Cleveland Cavaliers.

Andre Miller scored 27 points and Ricky Davis added 20 off the bench for Cleveland, which pulled away in the second half to hand the struggling Pacers their fifth loss in six games.

"I just came out and tried to force the issue and be aggressive," Miller said. "Everyone came in and played well tonight."

Reggie Miller served a one-game suspension for his scuffle with Philadelphia's Derrick Coleman on Saturday.

"We need to continue to work to get in snyc with everybody," Indiana forward Jeff Foster said. "We are fitting in with three new ballplayers, four when Ron (Mercer) comes back. Each one are different ballplayers than we are accustomed to."

Trying to get back into playoff position in the Eastern Conference, the Pacers pulled off a blockbuster deal with the Chicago Bulls earlier this week in an attempt to improve their frontline.

Indiana acquired swingman Ron Artest, center Brad Miller, guard Kevin Ollie and injured shooting guard Mercer from the Bulls for forward Jalen Rose and guards Travis Best and Norm Richardson.

Brad Miller just missed a double-double with 21 points and nine rebounds, while Ollie added a career-high 16 points. But the Pacers were outrebounded, 49-31, and failed to make a 3-pointer for the first time this season.

Indiana was 0-for-6 from beyond the arc and fell 1 1/2 games behind Washington and Philadelphia in the battle for the final playoff in the East.

"That was a clean win, a lot of positives," Cleveland coach John Lucas said. "When Andre and Davis play well we tend to come together as a team. I really like this new Pacers team. They'll get better."

Artest added 13 points, but Jermaine O'Neal (7-of-21), Jonathan Bender (4-of-11) and Jamaal Tinsley (3-of-13) were a combined 14-of-45 from the field.

"I didn't think we'd have a good offensive game without Reggie Miller but the new guys came in and did a good job," Indiana coach Isiah Thomas said. "We still didn't do a good enough job on the boards. I'm sure we can get better."

"I have to put it on myself," O'Neal added. "Never should I play 46 minutes and have only seven rebounds. "I felt like I stood around and watched a few plays."

Artest started in place of Reggie Miller but suffered a mild left ankle sprain early in the third quarter and only played five minutes in the second half.

"It was a freak accident," Artest said. "I was beginning to feel pretty comfortable. I just wish I could have stayed in and helped a little longer."

Andre Miller hit two free throws to snap a 61-61 tie with 5:38 left in the third and give the Cavaliers the lead for good. The Cavaliers closed the period with an 18-11 spurt to take a 79-72 lead into the final period and led by as many 14 points in the final minutes.

"We must keep in mind that Reggie wasn't here tonight and we will fit in with our defense, hopefully as time goes on," Ollie said.

With three new players in the lineup, the Pacers came out on fire and opened a 21-9 lead on Ollie's two foul shots with four minutes left in the first quarter.

But the Cavaliers closed within 27-21 after the first quarter, then took a 43-41 lead on Trajan Langdon's 3-pointer with 6:04 left in the first half. Tyrone Hill's foul shot and layup in the final minute gave Cleveland a 53-47 halftime advantage.

Wesley Person added 17 points and hit three 3-pointers for the Cavaliers, who shot 46 percent (38-of-82) from beyond the arc. Hill contributed 10 points and 17 rebounds.

The Pacers also shot 47 percent (37-of-79), but got no closer than nine in the final three minutes. Despite the loss, Indiana has won 11 of the last 13 against Cleveland.
