Game Story

WASHINGTON (Ticker) -- Michael Jordan's game-tying jumper put the pressure squarely on the Miami Heat, who turned to an unlikely source of offense in the closing moments.

Brian Grant nailed two clutch jumpers in the final 65 seconds, including the game-winner after Jordan had tied it, as the Heat escaped with a 97-95 victory over the struggling Washington Wizards.

Jordan, who scored 37 points, has a career filled with dramatic shots late in games. He delivered again Saturday, nailing a game-tying 12-foot turnaround jumper over Eddie Jones with 19 seconds left.

The shot forced Miami to make a basket on its final possession, but instead of going to one of their leading scorers, the Heat turned to the defensive-minded Grant.

Former Wizard Rod Strickland, who dished out a season-high 14 assists, drew three defenders before kicking the ball to Grant for a wide open 18-foot jumper from the left baseline with only 1.4 seconds remaining.

"(Strickland) went all the way down to the basket, he kicked it out to me and I just knocked it down," Grant said. "Rod Strickland had been getting to the basket all night. He did a good job of not passing me the ball too early."

Washington's first inbound attempt to Jordan was deflected out of bounds by Miami. Richard Hamilton received the second pass under the basket, but his layup was blocked by Jimmy Jackson as time expired.

"I might have gotten hit, but with that much time on the clock, I don't know if (the officials) thought I got it off on time," Hamilton said. "I don't think the refs wanted to judge the game on the last call. It's kind of tough because we let the game slip away."

"They had a little more time to work on their play than we did and they made big shots," Jordan said. "These are the type of games character is built upon. Winners and losers."

Jones scored 25 points and Strickland finished with 18 as Miami avoided its first losing streak in more than a month. Grant scored half his 12 points in the fourth quarter and pulled down 10 rebounds.

Miami, which shot 52 percent (41-of-79) from the field, has won 14 of its last 19 games overall and eight of its last 11 on the road.

The teams exchanged the lead four times in the fourth quarter before Grant sank a 17-footer from the left side off another pass from Strickland to give Miami a 93-91 edge with 1:05 to go.

"Our guys made shots, we had a great fourth quarter," Miami coach Pat Riley said. "Rod Strickland was absolutely outstanding tonight. He made two passes that needed to be made right on the hands of Brian Grant, so he could catch and shoot the ball."

Washington's Tyronn Lue responded with a tough jumper to forge a tie and Grant had his shot blocked on the other end, but Alonzo Mourning grabbed the rebound and was fouled.

Mourning, who scored 12 points, buried both free throws to give the Heat a 95-93 lead with 25 seconds left before Jordan forced the fourth tie of the period.

Hamilton scored 19 points but was held scoreless in the fourth quarter as Jordan scored 13 of Washington's 17 points.

"I know Rip is fighting that (injured) groin a little bit, so he may not have been where we wanted him to be down the stretch," Jordan said. "I'm there when I have to be there. I can't do it every night. I know we're going to see some contribution from other players and that's what we need."

Lue finished with 13 points off the bench and was the only other Wizards player other than Jordan to score in the final three minutes.
