Game Story

CHICAGO (Ticker) -- You didn't think the Chicago Bulls were going undefeated with Jalen Rose, did you?

The Bulls had a three-game winning streak with their newly acquired superstar snapped in a 112-97 loss to the Orlando Magic, who got 25 points from Tracy McGrady.

One week ago, the Bulls acquired Rose and guard Travis Best from the Indiana Pacers in a seven-player deal. Rose's presence as a versatile player was supposed to loan the Bulls some credibility, but it was not supposed to make them unbeatable. However, that's what Chicago was in its last three games.

With Chicago looking for its first four-game winning streak since the Michael Jordan era, Rose got a taste of what the Bulls have been going through. They were never really in it, allowing 38 points in the first quarter and trailing 90-68 after three periods.

"It doesn't taste good, and hopefully it's one I won't get used to," Rose said. "It's a process here and I understand that."

"I told our guys I was happy with the run we made, three in a row," Bulls coach Bill Cartwright said. "I was proud of that but we let it slip tonight. Tomorrow (at Detroit) we're going to to try and get back in the saddle."

McGrady made 9-of-19 shots and added nine rebounds and seven assists. He got some help from Pat Garrity, who also returned from an injury and scored 18 points on 7-of-11 shooting. Together, they helped the Magic win for the fourth time in five games.

"When Garrity and I are out, that's 35 points out of the lineup," said McGrady.

"It's amazing how good a coach I am when Tracy and Pat Garrity are shooting like they did," Magic coach Doc Rivers said. "One thing we do really well is shoot the ball. You saw that tonight."

Garrity scored 12 points and McGrady added 11 in the first period. A 3-pointer by Garrity with 2:53 left gave Orlando the lead for good at 26-24 and started a 15-4 run that closed the quarter.

"We wanted to take some of that confidence away," said Magic forward Horace Grant, a former Bull. "We didn't look at them as that team from a few weeks ago, but rather as the Bucks, or another team over .500."

"It's tough to play with them when they score 38 points in the first quarter," Best said.

Don Reid scored four point in an 8-0 burst that opened the second period and gave the Magic an 18-point cushion. They held a 64-51 halftime lead and McGrady's alley-oop dunk made it 88-68 late in the third quarter.

Grant scored 16 points, Mike Miller added 15 and 10 assists and Troy Hudson added 13 points for the Magic, who shot 49 percent (42-of-85) and committed just six turnovers.

Marcus Fizer scored 18 points and Best added 13 for the Bulls, who shot 43 percent (38-of-89). Chicago has dropped five in a row and 12 of 13 to Orlando.
