Game Story

SAN ANTONIO (Ticker) -- The San Antonio Spurs got their usual production from Tim Duncan. Danny Ferry's clutch play was a pleasant surprise.

Duncan and Ferry combined to score 13 points in a pivotal second-half run as the San Antonio Spurs posted a 99-91 triumph over the Phoenix Suns.

The Suns were up, 63-55, with 2:45 left in the third quarter when Ferry buried a 3-pointer that ignited a 17-4 spurt. Ferry had a pair of 3-pointers in the run, which was capped by a free throw from Duncan with 10:14 left.

Duncan finished with 29 points and 15 rebounds while Ferry chipped in 11 points in 24 minutes off the bench.

"Danny knows how to play the game and it's great that he is back," Duncan said. "Defensively, he makes stops for us, knowing how to do the little things, how to get a team on a roll and that's why I love having him on the floor.

"All I do is work hard and try to play my best, and sometimes it will be good enough and that is pretty much my focus when I'm out there."

Stephon Marbury scored 35 points for the Suns, who have dropped four of their last five games with the Spurs.

Marbury gave Phoenix a 63-59 lead with two free throws with 3:05 left in the third quarter and 20 seconds later Ferry buried his first 3-pointer of the contest to spark the run. Duncan put the Spurs ahead with a basket with 2:19 left but Bo Outlaw countered with a bucket for Phoenix.

Malik Rose gave the Spurs a 66-65 lead with 92 seconds remaining in the quarter. Charles Smith added a basket 33 seconds later to push the lead to four but Shawn Marion's basket with 25 seconds to go got Phoenix within 68-67.

But Rose and Duncan hit two free throws apiece in the final six seconds of the quarter to give San Antonio a 72-67 lead through 36 minutes.

Duncan opened the fourth quarter with two free throws to push the lead to seven and Ferry buried another 3-pointer 63 seconds into the quarter for a 77-67 lead.

Duncan's free throw with 10:14 left capped the spurt and Phoenix never got closer than seven the rest of the way.

"We are just trying to get on a roll, get some confidence built right now in this team," Duncan said. "Every game is absolutely important to us and we're playing them as such."

Phoenix shot 45 percent (38-of-85) from the floor, including 5-of-10 from 3-point range. The Suns also held a 45-38 rebounding edge.

San Antonio shot 44 percent (33-of-75), including 8-of-18 from beyond the arc. The Spurs committed 16 turnovers but did block nine shots.

David Robinson had 10 points and a season-high five assists for the San Antonio.
