Game Story

PHOENIX (Ticker) -- Stephon Marbury was quiet most of the way, but the Indiana Pacers forgot about him late in the fourth quarter and it cost them the game.

Marbury scored nine of his 26 points in the final minute of regulation as the Phoenix Suns forced overtime and posted a 107-100 victory over the Pacers.

The Suns trailed, 92-83, with 1:12 left, before outscoring the Pacers, 11-2. Marbury hit a wide-open 3-pointer with 31 seconds left and made three easy layups to force the extra period.

The Pacers had a chance to win, but Kevin Ollie's layup was waved off after Ron Artest was called for charging.

"I was trying to catch up to Ollie and foul him," Suns forward Tom Gugliotta said. "After I got past halfcourt, I didn't think I was going to be able to get to him without getting a flagrant. So I was ready to just stop and start jogging and I saw Artest coming at an angle and he just bumped me off."

On the ensuing possession, Marbury breezed past Artest for a reverse layup that tied it with eight seconds left.

After a timeout, Pacers forward Jermaine O'Neal missed a 15-footer from the baseline.

"Over the minute, they just outplayed us" Indiana rookie point guard Jamaal Tinsley said. "They hit shots, we missed free throws. We felt good, but we wanted to do it in regulation instead of going into overtime. It was a new game from there."

In overtime, Marbury scored four points and found Shawn Marion for a basket that gave Phoenix a 104-98 lead with 46 seconds remaining.

Marion finished with 21 points, Gugliotta had a season-high 18 and Penny Hardaway also scored 18 off the bench. All three were huge down the stretch and in overtime for the Suns, who had 28 assists and shot 46.5 percent (47-of-101).

"That's why you never stop playing," said Suns coach Frank Johnson, who improved to 3-4 since replacing Scott Skiles on February 17. "You fight to the bitter end and things like this happen. I'm sure we'll be in this situation again."

"We just never gave up in this game," Hardaway added. "They helped us out by missing free throws and Ron Artest made that play down the stretch. We kept pushing, went to overtime and gained energy. Normally, that's what happens when a team is at home."

The Suns outscored the Pacers, 13-6, in the extra period and took the lead for good, 100-98 on a layup by Marbury with 2:32 remaining.

"We've lost so many games this year, when mentally we lose our concentration and our focus, thinking we have the game in hand," Indiana guard Reggie Miller said. "We're not a group of veterans that can afford to do that. We're a young team that needs to concentrate for 48 minutes. It's inexcusable.

"This was one game that we definitely had to have, and as usual, we put our backs against the wall."

Miller, who has made a career out of hitting big shots, had 19 points. But the veteran shot just 6-of-15, including 1-of-8 from beyond the arc. At the end of regulation, Miller missed seven consecutive shots.

Brad Miller scored 13 of his 25 points in the fourth quarter as the Pacers appeared to have their first three-game winning streak in two months. But Miller was removed by coach Thomas with the lead apparently safe.
