Game Story

TORONTO (Ticker) -- Rasheed Wallace scored 20 points and grabbed 10 rebounds as the streaking Portland Trail Blazers broke open a close game in the final quarter and raced to a 91-81 victory over the floundering Toronto Raptors.

Dale Davis collected 16 rebounds along with 13 points and Damon Stoudamire scored 19 points as Portland won its eighth straight contest and improved to 3-0 on its four-game road trip.

The Trail Blazers outmuscled the Raptors on the boards, 58-37, in winning for the 19th time in their last 24 games.

"They have a lot of talent on the front, but we set the tone early," Davis said.

"Rebounding comes from everyone, it's a team effort," said Portland coach Maurice Cheeks. "We have been preaching all year that our guards and our big guys get rebounds."

Vince Carter scored 25 points and Antonio Davis added 21 as the Raptors lost their 10th straight game.

"We knew coming in about their losing streak," Stoudamire said.

"It was big for us because we didn't want to be the team to have a letdown and give them a victory."

Leading 71-66 after three quarters, Portland took control with an 18-8 burst.

The Blazers actually began their surge at the end of the third quarter when Ruben Patterson hit two free throws and Wallace hit one for the five-point edge.

Portland pulled away as Wallace scored six points in the decisive burst, capped by Patterson's follow dunk with 3:16 to go that made it 89-74.

"I thought a couple of us competed tonight but a couple didn't play like they should," Raptors coach Lenny Wilkens said.

Scottie Pippen had 15 points and Patterson 12 as Portland won despite shooting 38 percent (36-of-95), including 4-of-18 from 3-point range.

Toronto shot 43 percent (34-of-79) but allowed Portland 24 offensive rebounds while grabbing only 10. Davis and Hakeem Olajuwon led the way with eight boards apiece for the Raptors.

Carter played 44 minutes despite some tightness in his back. The All-Star shot 9-of-17 from the floor but was held to just four points in the decisive fourth quarter.

"I was running down the court and it started to lock up," Carter said. "We just have to play through it (the losing streak)."
