Game Story

ATLANTA (Ticker) -- Toni Kukoc scored 10 of his 23 points in the fourth quarter and Jason Terry had a key steal in the final minute to lead the Atlanta Hawks to their fourth straight win over the Cleveland Cavaliers, 84-81.

Kukoc made 9-of-11 shots from the field and was the Hawks' main weapon down the stretch, hitting his last eight attempts, including a 3-pointer with 3:15 left that gave Atlanta an 81-79 edge.

"When you shoot a 3-point fadeaway and it goes in, something is right," Kukoc said. "I saw the court well, I was penetrating and playing on the block and taking advantage of feeling good."

Held to three points, Terry preserved an 83-81 lead when he stole a long pass for Wesley Person that would have resulted in an uncontested layup. Terry made 1-of-2 free throws to give the Hawks a three-point cushion.

Ira Newble contributed a career-high 16 points and Shareef Abdur-Rahim added 14 and eight rebounds as Atlanta recorded just its second win in six games.

Lamond Murray chipped in 29 points and eight rebounds and Zydrunas Ilgauskas totaled 17 points and eight boards for the Cavaliers, who had won three of their previous four games.

Coming off a 37-point performance in a Thursday's overtime win against San Antonio, Andre Miller was held to 12 points on 3-of-10 shooting for Cleveland.

Atlanta trailed 33-18 after one quarter but put together its best defensive period of the season in the second, holding the Cavs to 13 points.

"It was a game we let slip away after we had control over it," Miller said. "We had a few plays down the stretch that cost us the game, especially the big turnover with the game tied up."

After Kukoc's finger roll with 57 seconds to play gave the Hawks an 83-79 edge, Murray sank a jumper to cut the deficit to two. Terry followed with his steal and free throw with six seconds left and Abdur-Rahim partially blocked Murray's desperate baseline 3-point attempt with three seconds left.

"It shouldn't have come down to that in the first place," Murray said of his final shot. "We had a couple of turnovers late in the game and that is the way it goes."

It was the most shot attempts of the season for Kukoc, who fell one point short of his season high point total, posted in a win over the Cavs on November 29. He paced a furious effort by the Hawks' bench, which outscored Cleveland's reserves, 41-7.

"Toni really hurt us," Cavs coach John Lucas admitted. "He doesn't seem to play well except only against us. He beat us the last time, he beat us again."

Alan Henderson had 11 points and DerMarr Johnson 10 for Atlanta, which shot 42 percent (35-of-84) from the field and was outrebounded, 41-34.

Cleveland hit 43 percent (29-of-68) from the field and was 21-of-25 from the foul line. But it was just 2-of-13 from beyond the arc.
